I am working on an itinerary for Spring ‘24; want to take W. Highland train from Glasgow to Maillaig, and either rent car there or across ferry in Armadale For a few days on Skye. The challenge is then wanting to take the rental car to Inverness to use there for a few days as well. Not seeing that option with rentals, as it looks like they have to be returned to Skye or Mallaig. Any ideas?

Most car hire firms on Skye are locally owned so don’t have the flexibility of a drop off away from the island. Check out Morar Motors and Morrison Car Hire
From their websites they both seem to allow hire at Mallaig with drop off at Kyle of Lochalsh. You can then catch the train from Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness and hire again there.

I can confirm that the only car rental places here on Skye are all very small, local firms with no base in Inverness. Your best bet would be a local company with pick up in Armadale and then drop off in Kyle, from where you could take the train to Inverness and rent another car there if you need one. Alternatively rent your car in Glasgow and drive up. The rail line and road from Fort William to Mallaig run close to each other for much of the way, so you'll see the same scenery.
