Canada's Newest Province?

Scotland in the out flow of last year's referendum some of the suggestions are better than others.

But would our North American friends come if the suggestion was carried out and Scotland become a Canadian province? This topic is not to be taken too seriously! I've always wanted to go to Canada, I was not expecting someone suggests Canada came to me!

I would love it to be part of Canada. The exchange rate for me would be 0 so much better than now.....LOL

That sounds marvelous! MC you should come to NYC, we can then get you upstate to Canada. :)

Since Scotland is one of my favourite places to visit I think it would be a great idea! I wouldn't have to worry about the exchange rate or keeping track of my passport! But, would we have to learn to drive on the left, or would you have to learn to drive on the right?

Anita, I think you would need to switch to driving on the left. It is according to the stats safer. Because most people are right eye dominant!

Or we just stick! Would we require Canadian plates? If so our national motto fits 'Nemo Me Impune Lacessit' . Which roughly translates as 'Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough!'

As for French, according to some treaty that no one is entirely sure of if it still applies, Scots are technically French already!

Pam

I am a country person. Countryside is me. There is something about big cities I dislike. The noise, the grime, the lack of green.

However... I have been to NYC. I hate London. I will avoid Paris like the plague. Am not keen on Rome. But I fell in love with NYC not despite my dislike of big cities, but because New York said 'and? Here have a nice meal'

One of the best museums in the world I have been to was in New York. Ellis Island. It told the American story better than almost anywhere else.

As a foreigner, New York is the America I dream of. City and state.

Unfortunately I have already signed up to the not going with Trump in the WH. Check the Samantha Bee channel on YouTube on Scotland v Trump.

Well, the last time I was in Scotland I drove on the left so I'm good with that. More important than learning French would be learning to say sorry for everything, and "eh" a whole lot.

Anita, we are British! We apologise for everything. Something that links the English, the Scots an d the Welsh. Saying 'eh', well, I think we gave that to you.

I think for us it is the loyalty to this Queen Elizabeth that might be the problem, also Ice Hockey.

Ice Hockey which is the fastest growing spectator sport in Scotland. I played field hockey at school, my partner went ice skating....
In NA terms, I support the Canucks.

And do Canadians really want to be one of the best rugby playing countries in the world?

Actually, if we can start to pinch your lot as seen in the World Cup, we might win. Canada and the US were good.

MC-Glasgow
Are there not quite a few words in Gaelic that are the same in French? So that would be a head start.

Norma

Scots has a lot of French in it. Not sure about Gaelic, but Scots certainly. As languages English and French are probably closer to each other in certain regards than their linguistic relatives

Certainly the classic Edinburgh cry of 'Gardy loo' when throwing out the chamber pot was from the French 'Guardez l'eau'.

If you look at Edinburgh as a city, it makes more sense as 'French' than 'English'.

However. Would the Canadians actually want us?

Of course we Canadians would want you, dear heart. Have you any idea how many Canadians have Scottish ancestors, myself included? The church I grew up in and no longer attend, had an annual Robbie Burns dinner, right here in Montreal in the French province of Quebec.

Ah, Norma

Would you, Canada, want 'European Union' 'Union européen' at the top of your passports?

Actually, if the UK was not an option but everyone else was, Canada would be one of my choices!

Norma, meant to say, there is a joke that Ireland got America and Australia. Scotland took New Zealand and Canada. We got the better deal!

As I sit in Nova Scotia, which means New Scotland, I wonder what we would call this new province. Just Scotland could be confused with New Scotland. I am not sure they would like to be called Old Scotland although it would be accurate. Often the older generation doesn't like to be called Old John when the next generation has a young John.

Scotland, the elder.

I think you should become part of the U.S. Then you could build a great wall along YOUR southern border. (I think more Scots would be in favor of that than Americans are of our wall.)

Both of you already have that whole curling thing pretty much locked up as it is, so your domination on the world & Olympic stage would only get stronger, surely!

Pass the Drambuie, please.

Sorry, Frank. We tend to view Canada as our 'special friend' and we have the NHS to consider. My prescriptions cost nothing!

Obamacare would have failed in the UK, not just Scotland, because it looked like privatisation!

Well, we have Nova Scotia, so I'm thinking Auld Scotia might work, Vielle Ecosse in the other official language.

Geologically Western Scotland is supposed to have been part of Eastern Canada before the Continental Drift. Welcome Back, Eh!

With respect to building a wall on the southern border of Scotland, didn't Emperor Hadrian try that almost 2000 years ago? His intent may have been to keep the Scots out of Roman Britain, but it didn't seem to accomplish much.

Don't forget Scotland's official motto is

Nemo Me Impune Lacessit.

Roughly translated as 'Come and Have a Go if You Think You Are Hard Enough!'
