I am heading back to Scotland the beginning of May and taking a 9 day tour of some of the islands and the highlands. After the tour I have 5 days and recall going through Callander last year. I'd like to just chill out the last five days and I am trying to decide between Stirling and Callander. I am happily retired, love easy hikes, museums, and a bit of shopping. Any suggestions for a B&B or good restaurant?
If you want to hike, I would recommend Callander. It's much closer to the Trossachs and further north to Perthshire. However, you won't find the museums. You can however get to Stirling for a day to tour the castle. I assume you'll have a car. You'll need it to reach the hikes. One of the fun things to do is to rent a bike and take the steamboat out on Loch Katrine and then bike back. If you don't have the energy for the bike, you can always return on the boat. I took a drive out the glen near Balquhidder and ran into people planning on a walk.
My favorite area for walking is either in the north or out Dunkeld. I like Dunkeld as there is a great pub with traditional music.
