Caledonian Sleeper booking question – one or two people in club room?

I apologize if this has already been answered on these forums; I searched but found nothing on this topic.

I will be booking (today or tomorrow!) a room on the Caledonian Sleeper for early November (silly me; I didn't realize you could get tickets so far in advance, unlike regular tickets, so it is already sold out for my first-choice day). Since the trip is still over 7 months out, my husband doesn't know if he'll have to work then (and thus wouldn't be able to come along). But I notice that prices for a 'club' room are £60–70 more for two people than for one person (which makes sense, as breakfast and lounge access are included).

Not sure what to do ... pay the extra just on the off chance my husband can come along? Or buy for one person, and 'add' him later? Is that even possible?

I've looked at the FAQs on the website and it doesn't address this situation (not surprisingly), and I don't see a 'chat' option (although it's nighttime in Scotland now, so I'll check back).

I'm guessing it's easier to add a person and pay, than to subtract a person and get a refund :-)
Apparently you can cancel up to 7 days in advance, which is generous, but I wouldn't want to take the chance of canceling and then quickly rebooking ...

Does anyone have any advice? Nigel? Stuart? John? others?
Thank you!

~ Laura

There is supposed to be a Chat button at bottom right on each page, but it appears to have vanished!!

The social media team and the customer contact centre are open 24 hours a day from 12 noon UK on Sunday to 4pm uK on Saturday.

So I would either call, tweet or PM them on Facebook. They do seem to be responsive, at least on Twitter which is what I tend to look at.

If you did need to amend then you would probably have to do that through the call centre to avoid somebody nipping in and nabbing the cabin in the brief interval between your cancelling and rebooking.

A solo cabin is just a 2 berth cabin being used by one person, so on the face of it you would not have thought there would be an issue with adding a 2nd person later.

But who knows? This is an unusual question, one I haven't heard of before.

They stay open all night in case of on board problems, which can't be resolved on train.

PS- To activate live chat, supposedly clear your cookie cache, then go out and back in to their web site, and 'accept all cookies'.

Allegedly live chat will then appear on each page at bottom right.

Please tell us if that scheme actually works.

Thank you so much, Stuart! I'll try your suggestions.

I agree about not risking the cancelling/rebooking!

I don't mind paying a bit extra just in case, but £70 is a lot for one night ... :-)

Thanks again!

ooh, yes, I'll try the 'live chat' and let you know if it works. Probably tomorrow, as I have to run to the post office (it's hailing here (!)) and when I get back it will be very late indeed in Scotland ... :-)

Thank you SO much, Stuart, for your ideas. I tried messaging them on FB (which I never would have thought of, even though I should know it's an option!!) and received a reply right away!! Here it is:

You can buy for one person and then on the night if he is able to come
pay £75 and he can join you in your room, Ewan

So I'm all set! Many thanks.

Thank you, Kim! and yes, kudos to Stuart. And, I'm relieved it wasn't an obvious question ... you never know! ;-)

My husband was lobbying for paying for two people now, just in case he can come, but as it's over 7 months away and there's a very good chance he won't be able to come b/c of work (or won't want to, given that it's November and there won't be much daylight for him to go exploring while I'm at my 5-day class), I didn't really want to pay £70 extra and then lose it ... This was a great solution!
