Was going to book at the Caledonia Hotel by Fort William as price is good & many more expensive.
But reviews are highly mixed from terrible to excellent?
Anyone stay here recently & can comment please
I haven't stayed at the Caledonian Hotel (as I assume you mean).
However I am aware of it.
I am amused by the new Bespoke Hotels brand. If you look closely you will see that Bespoke Hotels is a sub brand of Coast and Country Hotels which is itself a brand of Shearings Travel. Bespoke would not be my first choice descriptor.
They are a budget bus tour operator.
That is the hotels primary trade- catering for big bus budget tours. Their hotels are a!most all rather faded grand old hotels. I have stayed at quite a few of them, travelling independently. Maintenance is often a weak point. The food is wholesome and plentiful, but not by any measure gourmet, and served at coach party speed.
In particular I admit to being obsessed about fire safety in hotels. At several C and C properties I have had significant concerns in that department.
That style of hotel suits some people not others. The reason I haven't stayed there is mainly how far out of town it is. Again a plus to some, a minus to others.
In summary there are reasons for its reasonab!e price. The reviews fairly reflect that it suits some, not all.
I read that there is on going maintenance - there is almost certainly a big backlog of work to do there.
I know you can do better in Fort William, even if it means spending a bit more.
I stayed at the Premier Inn. A five minute walk to both the train station and the bus station.
I"d stay there again.
I don't know anyone who has stayed there as most locals needing to travelling to Fort William would avoid what are seen as budget coach tour hotels. Almost everyone I know who has to travel to Fort William, myself included, stay at the Premier Inn. It's a budget chain, but you know what you are getting, which is a clean room, with a comfy bed, tv, wifi and an en suite bathroom with shower over the bath. The Fort William Premier Inn has a Brewer's Fare pub next door which serves breakfast (you can pay as part of your room booking) and evening meals. The food is not the best, and I tend to either bring breakfast with me and eat it in my room, or pop over the road to Morrisons supermarket which has a cafe serving breakfast. There's also a McDonalds next door.
So I'd suggest opting for the Premier Inn over the Caledonian. There are also lots of small B&Bs in Fort William, some with sea views.
I've also stayed at the Kingshouse above Glencoe, which was excellent and would be my first choice if I needed a stop between Glasgow and Skye.
I stayed at the Caledonia last November.
I was perfectly happy with it , clean and tidy.
Tea making stuff ,comfy bed.
I got there late so never went to the bar, but then again that's of low low priority
Thanks for all your helpful comments.
We decided to stay at the Ballachulish Hotel in Glencoe. A bit more expensive but I prefer a place with character & nice setting. This one looks nice & has good reviews!
That's definatly a trade up .
Great views back up to the Pap of Glencoe and over to Moidart.
The Hollytree Hotel not too far away is good for food and has huge floor to ceiling glass overlooking Loch Linhe
Not on subject, but we stayed at the Myrtlebank and although it was a little above average price, they upgraded us to an entire house. Breakfast was exceptional and a short walk to town. I think we paid $160 for a two story luxury house for two.
