Cairngorms Travel

Hello! We will be based out of Braemar for 5 days in mid-April. I would love some suggestions for hikes/walks in the Cairngorms area and day trips that we can do that are no more than 2.5 hours away from Braemar (so we can drive out in the morning and then drive back by nightfall). We love walking, hiking, eating, trains, listening to local music, and exploring towns/villages. I wonder, too, how much we can do ourselves or if it's a good idea to hire someone for a guided walk (we did that in the Burren in Ireland last year and it was awesome getting to hear about the geology/history of the area while we walked). We are a family of 4 with two younger kids (5 and 9), both good travelers.

You can start here at https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk. It says Highlands, but it covers walks all over the country and then some. You can find distances, locations, photos, and reviews by other hikers. It's really a great website and easy to use.

Are you familiar with the WalkHiglands website?

I think you can easily find hikes in the area and at the length and difficulty level you're looking for.
