bus travel to Skye

I have been researching Citylink for travel to Skye (Broadford , stop Armadale Road End) from Edinburgh. From what I have read on forum, not luggage room for suitcases for 2 people.

Citylink prices seemed extremely high. Any feedback on fares paid would be appreciated.
I can't seem to get anywhere on Megabus site, especially trying to talk to Chuck!
Advise appreciated, travel is early September. Gail

P.S. I can't figure out how to book Citylink with a return to Glasgow, not Edinburgh.

Hi hellweek2/Gail -

I think possibly part of the problem might be that there’s apparently no direct route Edinburgh to Skye. I think you might need to split it up as follows: Edinburgh to Glasgow, Glasgow to Fort William, Fort William to Skye. I have messed about with the Citylink website and there does seem to be a through route indicated, but I’m blowed if I can get it to work for me, so you have my sympathies. And yes, it does look pricey and it would seem to indicate very few options re timetable, i.e, one bus a day to Skye from Fort William, which means you might have to break journey through at Fort William.

Alternative might be train from Edinburgh to Glasgow and then Glasgow to Mallaig to catch the ferry to Armadale and see what the options are from there in getting to Broadford. I’m not suggesting this as a cheaper alternative but it may get you there in a day.

The easiest option it would seem is to drive. This won’t be cheap either given car hire and gas prices here, but if you travelled by public transport to Glasgow Airport to collect a car you wouldn’t have to brave much of the urban traffic/motorway system as the airport is on the right side of town to escape fairly quickly into the Highlands. Then again there are the narrow roads further up, first and notably at the northern end of Loch Lomond.

Sorry to be not much help - hopefully somebody with a bit more local knowledge will weigh in. If nothing else this boots your query to the top of the list again for a little while!

Hope you get it sorted! Skye is marvellous!

There is no direct service from Edinburgh to Skye. It's Glasgow or Inverness. So your best bet would probably be train across to Glasgow and get the bus from there. The service is the 915 and the timetable is here It's possible to book via the Citylink website.

There are 3 services a day that don't require a change, although they all stop in Fort William for a change of driver.

The price is around £50 single.

Hope that helps.

Hiring a car would be the best option, as getting round Skye would be much easier with your own transport.

Have you booked accommodation on Skye?

Since you're going to be there in just about 6 weeks' time, if you haven't booked lodging yet, consider that the Dornie Hotel is on the mainland about 10 minutes from the Kyle of Lochalsh bridge. If you have a rental car, it's just as convenient as staying on Skye itself. The hotel is basic, nothing fancy, but clean and affordable, with helpful staff and good meals in the pub.
