I'm looking for an inexpensive place for 3 adults to stay near the airport the night before departure at 6:50 a.m. I've googled but either the date isn't available or the place is around $150+. I'd appreciate suggestions (especially ones that don't include "sleep on floor at airport....). ;)

You don't say when you are looking to book for.
One of your issues is that you are looking for one room for 3 adults - 95% of UK rooms are for 2 people maximum, so you have limited your supply already.
Most value chains sell their rooms in price bands and when x number of rooms are sold, the price goes up - again and again. Rooms are available c 12 months out and I guess that you maybe looking for a booking fairly soon if places are booked up. Alternatively, you are looking for a room in August during the Festival, when most rooms sold out last August!
Edinburgh city centre is not too far from the airport and at that time of day, will be quick by taxi c 15/20 minutes. Any hotel near the airport will take at least this length of time by shuttle bus. I would look to stay in the city centre as that will broaden your search options. You don't say where you are flying to, but if it is a transatlantic flight, you will need to be there at 3.50 or say 5.20 latest if within Europe. All your hotel options are going to be on booking.com.

You're right - I left out things I meant to include. This will be the night of June 16, departing for Manchester, from there back to U.S. We'll have a car b/c we'll returning from Stirling on the 16th.
I'll keep searching.

Stirling is only about a 45 minute drive to the Edinburgh airport. I think I would just stay the night in Stirling and drive in to the airport in the morning.

I would agree with staying in Stirling ,if you have hired from the airport then there is a drop box for keys if you are there before they open. just a couple of minutes walk from the Car Hire Hub to the terminal.
