The most obvious is Dundee...V & A museum, Discovery Museum and Ship, McManus museum and the Verdant Works.

Broughty Castle is near you.

Glamis Castle is the childhood home of the former Queen Mother.

There are a bunch of distilleries north of you. Balmoral Castle isn't very far but you can only drive by. No visiting.

Aberdeen?

Have you been to Edinburgh?

If it is a nice day, take the slow scenic drive to Inverness. Have you been to Loch Leven Castle? It's greast fun as it is on an island and reached by boat. Near Perth is Huntingtower - again another interesting place to visit.

From Perth, take the Snow road, A93 which takes you some of the wildest scenery in Scotland through Braemar to Ballater. Here take the A939 through the Cairngorms past Corgaff Castle high on the hill above the road (and again an interesting place to visit) to Grantown on Spey. Then A95 to Aviemore to pick up A9 to Inverness.

At Aviemore, there is the Funicular railway to the top of Cairngorm (for the views as there is no access to the mountain from the top.) Alternatiely, there is the Strathspey Steam Railway, a gently run behind a steam engine.

OR if you are interested in social history and how people used to live, there is the Highland Folk Museum at Newtonmore. This has over 35 buildings reassembled here from the 1700s to the 1950s. It is fascinating and well worth a visit - allow at least two hours to try and see everything.

I was on the train from Dundee to Aberdeen last Friday. Very simple.

Take the train from Broughty Ferry to Arbroath then change to a train to Aberdeen. It's pretty much all Scotrail so you can plan on their website.

I haven't spent much time in Aberdeen except to go between the train station and the airport.

Thank you all. Frank can you tell me if you purchased you train tickets on line or on the train. We are on Gray Street Broughty Ferry and it appears we can catch the train there. Just can not buy tickets

Thank you

I buy my tickets through the Scotrail app. For a station like Broughty Ferry it's the easiest.

You can buy from the conductor but you will probably not get the cheapest fare.

The other choice is to go to the Dundee station by bus and leave from there. On your return you can take a train to Broughty Ferry rather than go back to Dundee.

If you take the bus to the Dundee station, take the 5 or 5a to Whitehall St. Then its less than a 10 minute walk to the station.
