We're planning to spend four nights on Skye this fall, and plan to do some driving (Trotternish Peninsula, Talisker Distillery among others). One of the accommodations we're looking at is near Broadford. Is this too far away to be practical? Are there restaurants there, or would we need to go to Portree for that?
Broadford is fine as a location. There are a few restaurants so you should be fine. There's Cafe Sia which does decent pizza, also Claymore which is seafood. Broadford Hotel, the Harbour restaurant and also Red Skye just a bit south of the village. There's also a couple of lunch spots, Deli Gasta and the Coffee Bothy. Wherever you base yourself on Skye you'll be doing a fair bit of driving so Broadford is as good a place as any.
I'd suggest booking your accommodation as soon as possible as Skye is incredibly popular and availability is difficult to come by.
Thanks, Skyegirl, that's very helpful.
From Broadford you also have the option of the road out to Elgol. I strongly recommend going to Elgol, stopping on the way at Amy's Place tea room for some of the best cake on the island (they do take away too), then going on a boat trip with either Misty Isle or Bella Jane. They do short trips towards the Cullin mountains or half day trips out to the isles of Canna and Rum. You can't go wrong either way and you're almost guaranteed to see seals, dolphins and any number of sea birds. It's one of my favourite things to do and I live here!
