Booking a last minute trip to Edinburgh? Anything I should know?

Currently backpacking in Europe and gonna be switching locations soon. I travel solo and plan on the go. I’m debating where to fly out to in 2 days.

I hear Edinburgh is having a big event festival thing right now. I hear some of the events don’t need a ticket and some do. I did find accommodation (hostels) during the time I would be visiting.

Should I come to Edinburgh now or save it for another time? I assume I could go to the smaller shows but don’t know if I would have trouble because I didn’t book in advance.

The Fringe is the largest performing arts festival in the world. If the festival is back to pre- COVID mode, there should be many low cost tickets still available, in addition to the overall festival atmosphere in which to immerse oneself. The days are full of open air street theater, costumed performers passing out flyers to their shows, hundreds of ticketed performances, and is just fun. I've been there twice and will return. I would encourage you to go. Safe travels!

Almost everyplace I encountered in July was tap and pay. There were a few places that didn’t take cash. I didn’t use my Apple Pay but did see that being utilized as well. Walk out of the airport and either the tram or the Airlink 100 right in front of you go to the center of town. City busses are easy, as are taxis or Uber. Lothian is the bus system and they have an app for travel planning in case you aren’t in the city center.

I’ve answered more fully in your General Europe question.

The Fringe gets underway around 4th/5th August (some shows start on the Thursday, others on Friday). People will be stopping you on the street trying to get you to come to their shows. The weekend will be crazy. But you will be able to get tickets to almost anything except the biggest names - or just walk into a free show (donations will be requested at the end). And even performers at the free shows will generally have facilities for tap & pay… I have performed a bunch of free shows, and started using a card reader in 2018 to encourage donations!
