Best way to get Skye from Boston

Hi there,
I am planning on going on a hiking holiday with a tour operation to Skye in June 2015. I have two ways planned to get there (step 2 below) and wanted to know which would be the best way.

Step 1: Flight
BOS --> Heathrow

Step 2: Two Options
Option 1: Fly
Heathrow --> Gatwick (shuttle)
Gatwick --> Inverness (1.5 hr flight)
Inverness Airport --> Inverness Train Station

Option 2: Train
Heathrow --> Euston (plan for 3 hours)
Euston --> Inverness (Caledonian Sleeper -- departs 2115 and 2350)

Step 3: Train
Inverness --> Kyle of Lochalsh (2.3 hours)
Kyle of Lochalsh --> Broadford

Any thoughts would be great!

Thanks

Laura

You can also find code-shared flights from Boston that cover you all the way to Inverness, e.g., Aer Lingus with connections at Shannon or Dublin and Birmingham.

All flights from Boston go through Heathrow, on British Airways which I have frequent flier miles with. I don't fly Air Lingus anymore multiple bad experiences. I did try to find flights from Boston to Inverness without much luck.

Hi Laura,

I'm sorry you've had bad times with Aer Lingus. I've done four trips, now, and really like the 2-4-2 seating in coach. This past April I traveled and used British Airways miles to go in business class BOS > DUB for $124 in cash plus miles (I don't remember the miles needed). I booked by calling BA and asking, not doing it online. Should the long haul part be acceptable vs. domestic, I see Flybe does DUB to Inverness, http://www.hial.co.uk/inverness-airport/destinations/

Perhaps using the map on the Inverness site you can get creative with connections.

Cheers.

Thanks Betsy! I will call BA probably would be easier in the long run. I am leaning towards the sleeper only so I could be somewhat refreshed for the hike. I was wondering if anyone had done it before.

Hi Laura,

Just to clarify b/c I don't think I did it well .. I used BA miles on Aer Lingus. It worked well and I liked paying less cash for the ticket than if I'd used the miles on BA. The complete oneworld list of options for partners and code-shares, http://www.oneworld.com/member-airlines/british-airways

Too bad KLM isn't part of oneworld. BOS > AMS > Inverness would work perfectly.

Cheers.

You could also fly to Edinburgh via Heathrow and then take the train to Kyle of Lochalsh. Or, look into train to Mallaig, ferry to Armadale, bus to Broadford. You could break your trip in Fort William or Edinburgh.
