Best towns to stay in the highlands?

My husband and I will be in the highlands September 1 - 5 and I'm looking for a cute hamlet to put us up for four nights that will also allow us to do day trips around the highlands for hiking, history and more. I've looked at Nairn, Beauly, and Strathpeffer, but would love guidance!

Any of those three would work but they are smll towns rather than a hamlet. A hamlet is a tiny settlement of a few houses gathered together, which may not be what you want.. It won't have a church, school shops and may not have a pub either... .

Places like Cromarty or Dornoch tomight be worth considering too.

We stayed in Inverarary which has a Castle and is near Loch Lomand & the Trossachs National Park and Glencoe. It had a charming family style pub where we met locals and some travelors. We are from Seattle and noticed a person with a Seahawks sweatshirt. We asked if they too were from Seattle; no, Vancouver, B.C. which is close enough that we watch some of the same TV stations. A big surprise is that when were went to our B&B, a beautiful Manor House, Our friends from Van were right behind us. After they put the kids to bed, they joined us in the lounge with 2 other couples from Glasgow that were celebrating an Anniverary with a weekend away. We had some whisky, we had purchased after a distillary tasting which we offered up to all! We did our laundry at a campground near the National Park. Inverarary is close to Oban where you can catch ferries to Mull, etc. Check out other things of interest on www.visitscotland.com.
