Best town on the Isle of Skye for 3 night stay

We are staying on the Isle of Skye for three nights at the beginning of September. Our itinerary includes arriving in Glasgow from Iceland and making our way to Dunkeld for the Highland Games. We are looking for a three night stay on the Isle of Skye as a homebase for hiking. (We like both short and long hikes as long as they provide incredible scenery). We finish our trip with 3 nights in Edinburgh). Portree lodging options are diminishing. Other towns are less expensive but I question whether we would have a similar experience. We do want to experience music sessions in town after a day of exploring the island. Should we stay in Portree or are there other options which are more economical?? Please offer any suggestions.

Thanks,
Nick

Look at www.visitscotland.com for more options. This is a great gateway site that has wonderful photography showing the many regions of Scotland with list of accommodations and means of transportation,

Portree should have the most options. One place you could stay for hiking is Sligachan which gives easy access to the Cuillin mountains but there's not much else there besides the hotel. I'm sure others here will have more suggestions!

Portree has the most options but I stayed in Broadford for 3 nights and enjoyed it. I assume you will have a car.

My daughter and her partner stayed at Dunvegan and really liked where they stayed. They did have a car. They stayed there because they wanted to hike that area - Neist Point, the Old Man of Storr, and the fairy pools were on their agenda. I guess it depends a lot on the hikes you want to do. When I was there many moons ago we stayed in Portree and I guess that's the best option if you won't have your own car.

There are some places right outside of Portree that might be less expensive. In 2023, I stayed at a B&B about a half mile outside of town and it was only £55 a night, and included breakfast.

Unfortunately, the owner has decided not to continue given the higher taxes now, but you might try looking on Google Maps for hotel and B&B listings and check out the reviews. That's how I found my place.

For local, live music your best bets are Portree (live music at a bar called 1820 most weekends), Edinbane Inn in the very small hamlet of Edinbane has Sunday afternoon sessions in the summer (and they have B&B rooms), or the Old Inn, in Carbost.

I am surprised that you are not finding decent availability for September. Some B&Bs may not yet have open their diaries that far ahead. And as Mardee says some smaller places have thrown in the towel following the introduction of licensing (and associated fees). Have you looked at 'self catering' and AirBnB?

We stayed at Grenitote B&B which I thought was pretty reasonable for being a short walk to the Portree city center. I only discovered them by "walking" the streets using Street View on Maps. Breakfast was great but the rooms were a little "short" due to low ceilings in spots. Easy access to the Troternish Peninsula and points south.

We were in Portree for three nights in May, and were a little disappointed in the music. It was the same duo playing three different places on different nights, playing "popular" stuff, from Jackson Brown to Galway Girl. Definitely not a session, although they were good musicians. I think the Old Oak (Old Inn, my mistake) has actual sessions on certain nights, although by September, they may be losing steam.

Edited to say that the sessions at the Old Inn should still be operating but always best to ask locals when you’re here or phone the pub or bar to ask what’s on and when.

There are a couple of excellent local session groups in Portree now, once of which plays at the 1820 bar on Sundays. There is also the Skye Accordian and Fiddle Club who meet in Portree once a month and welcome visitors. A great mix of local and guest talent. You can find them on Facebook.
