Just wondering about the type of shoes I wouldl need to bring for Best of Scotland in August?
Everything I have read about Scotland says get waterproof shoes and or hiking shoes for lots of uneven terrain, etc. My question is do I really need hiking shoes or just water proof / relatively water resistant sneakers or similar? I will be going to Bergen Norway after Scotland that looks like it will have similar weather to Scotland so will need to be able to do dual duty.
For lots of uneven terrain.
I think this depends completely on you & your feet. I would never go somewhere with uneven terrain without hiking boots, they are the best for stabilizing your walk. In Northern Europe, no one cares what you wear on your feet! We wear Moab 3 waterproof boots.
I fear that "relatively water resistant sneakers or similar" means wet feet. Depending on the terrain and your feet (more accurately, your ankles) you may not need hiking boots. If the Best of Scotland and Bergen is mostly city and gravel or paved trails and you aren't carrying a 30 pound backpack and have reasonably stable ankles then waterproof shoes with a decent sole should be sufficient.
Thanks for the input. I will start my search for a pair of waterproof hikers.
My concern would be finding a pair of waterproof hiking shoes that fit you well and breaking them in sufficiently before your trip. If you don't already own such shoes, will you really have occasion to use them before your trip? The best shoes for any trip are ones that you know won't give you blisters. For uneven terrain, you want a good, grippy sole (obviously). I'd worry less about wet feet than about uncomfortable shoes. You can wear wool socks to keep your feet warm even when wet. Make sure you have a second pair of shoes so they can dry out if they do get wet.
I agree with G3rryCee.
We did some wet hikes in Norway. I wore my low hiking shoes that I sprayed with waterproofing. I prefer these to my waterproof hiking boots.
