Best Place to Stay Between Edinburgh and Isle of Skye

I’m planning a trip for four adults who love nature, hiking, small villages and delicious food. I’m looking for a place to stay for 3 nights between Edinburgh and Skye and would appreciate suggestions. I’ve considered Airbnbs or B & Bs in Pitlochry, Aviemore or Inverness, but am at a loss. I don’t want to feel rushed.

Edinburgh (2 nights)
Isle of Skye ( 2 nights)
Fort William (2 nights)
Oban (1 night)
Stirling (1 night)

I would appreciate any advice! Thank you!

I suggest staying in Nairn, a lovely seaside village about 20 minutes from Inverness. We stayed at the Sunny Brae B&B, our favorite place on the whole trip.

From Nairn, we visited the following:
Elgin Cathedral ruins
Biblical gardens behind the cathedral
Whiskey at the Glen Moray Distillery
Cawdor Castle & gardens
Culloden Battlefield

On our way to Skye from Nairn, we visited Urquhart Castle, and then stopped at Eilean Donan Castle for photos.

If you decide to stay in Nairn, let me know. I can recommend some restaurants.

Also want to add that Skye really deserves 3 nights. And I would stay in Glencoe village instead of Fort William. Maybe omit Oban and add that night to Skye?

Are you flying home from Edinburgh? If so, depending on what time your flight is, you might want to stay at a hotel near the airport instead of staying in Stirling. We drove from Glen Coe to our hotel by the airport, and stopped at Stirling Castle along the way. It worked out perfect for us.

We will definitely check out Nairn. It sounds perfect and I would love to stay in the B&B you recommended. We found a beautiful B&B in Fort William and hope to visit Glencoe from there. I haven’t booked my flight yet so I still need to plan our last night. Thanks for the advice.

Fort Augustus is a nice stop on the shores of Loch Ness, We stayed at a lovely B&B. https://www.whitehousefortaugustus.com/
you can walk right into town. We also took a rib boat ride on Loch Ness that morning (instead of the slow cruiser). It was a highlight of our trip.

Have you considered Dumfries and surrounding areas?

Within the first three days we saw Red Kites, Golden Eagles and some unusual black sheep breed!

There's a natural waterfall not too far away and other scenery is breath taking.

I have no idea when they moved Dumfries to be between Edinburgh and Skye, but it must have been a big shock to the townsfolk!!

Not sure if you are two couples or would each need a separate accommodation, but...
We absolutely loved staying at Heatherfield House B&B, just 3 miles outside of Plockton, on the Is of Skye! Barbara and her husband Donald are just lovely and the property was peaceful, yummy breakfasts and everything was immaculate.

I think Rebecca means that Heatherfield House is just outside Portree on the Isle of Skye, not Plockton. Plockton is on the mainland not Skye.

To the OP, if you decide to stay near the airport, we stayed at the Edinburgh Dakota, which is lovely. The included breakfast buffet is ample and delicious. We had dinner there the night before, and it was one of the best meals of our trip. They provide a complimentary van shuttle to the airport.

Thank you for all of the advice. We do need a place to stay before our flight home from Edinburgh and will check out the one recommended. We booked a stay at Sandown House in Nairn for a few nights. Nairn looks like a beautiful place to visit. We plan on visiting Culloden Moore and Elgin Cathedral Ruin. We also found a beautiful B&B on the Isle of Skye. Excited for our trip!
