Best location to stay in Isle of Skye

HI- This is our first time to scotland and I want to overnight in Skye for two nights, but there seems to be quite a distance from one point to the next. Is there a good 'central' location that has the best access to key spots?

Hi, jenniebrown,

That's a good Scots name!

Portree would be the obvious choice, as it's at the junction of the roads to all of Skye's northern peninsulas. However, you did not say when you'll be travelling. If it's this summer, much of the accommodation in Portree, and even for all of the Isle of Skye, may be booked by this time. Broadford, although it is a good 45 minutes from Portree, is another town where you may possibly be able to find something, although it's not as centrally located.

You may want to try the Isle of Skye accommodation website. www.isleofskyerooms.com One of our travel forum's frequent contributors, Jacqui (Skyegirl), may have some additional suggestions. The main thing, at this point, would be to let us know when you're travelling, and how many of you are travelling. There are several really good hostels on Skye, which are a suitable alternative source of accommodation, if all else fails. I can personally recommend the Dun Flodigarry and Skyewalker hostels, although they are a bit far removed from the centre of Skye. Both are in very scenic locations, however.

Good luck!

Hi Jennie
As Mike says it will very much depend on when you are coming to Skye, as accommodation does get booked up early. Portree is a good base and has more accommodation than other villages. Although if you have a car then Broadford, Carbost, or Dunvegan would also be good bases. There is a particularly good pub in Carbost! Also budget should be a consideration. Most B&Bs and camping pods are upwards of £100 per night these days. Some hotels are three times that.

The Skye Rooms Facebook group is a good place to ask for last minute accommodation. They ask accommodation providers to detail their availability for the coming week. But you could also post a message asking for accommodation further out.

Best wishes
Jacqui

We were in Portree last June and I had success by clicking on the little red dots on Google Maps when you search for nearby hotels. We ended up at Grenitote which was very pleasant, two blocks from town center, and great breakfast. Rooms were pretty small. You can check with them with a Google search, as they don't (or didn't) use booking.com etc.

We liked basing in Portree. It was a convenient location and has more restaurant choices than you would likely find elsewhere. We had a car. We were in an Airbnb, so I can’t recommend where you could stay. I suggest you make a reservation somewhere ASAP.
