Best driving map of Scotland

What's your favorite driving map of Scotland?
We will have directions written out and GPS is an options when service is available, but there's nothing like having a good old map!

Scotland's Visitor's Guide A-Z, Philip's Navigator Scotland...or...?

Thanks!

Two best ideas ( which I use ) an up to date GPS ( Satnav , in Britain } and an Ordnance Survey map as a back up . I also study maps at home , regardless of my destination , so by the time I arrive , I'm familiar with the lay of the land. Going back there this coming Autumn for a long stay

Hi, Rebecca,

I've found that the AA road atlas of Great Britain and Ireland will be all that you need. It's in an 11 x 14 inch format. They are available at the petrol stations at most supermarkets, also at bookshops, TI centres, and newsagents. It shouldn't cost more than 10 pounds.

The one thing that the AA road atlas is missing is detailed maps of the cities, but you most likely will not need that, as there aren't that many major cities in Scotland. The RAC used to print a really nice spiral bound road atlas, which included the cities. I found that the places which I was looking for were always in the spiral!

I've never needed a GPS (SatNav) in Scotland, as the maps are so detailed. An Ordnance Survey map will come in handy if you plan to do a lot of remote hiking, but most routes are well signposted.

Happy travels!

Six weeks in Scotland last May/June ........ Philip's Navigator Scotland was our main reference as well as Google Maps via Apple Carplay. Collins also offers "Pocket Maps" by selected areas. Very inexpensive £3.99. We picked these up along the way.

Another vote for the AA road atlas of Great Britain and Ireland. We've been using these for years and they are so cheap it doesn't matter if it is falling to pieces by the end of the trip.

We have a Borsch map that we bought years ago at Barnes & Noble. It’s laminated so we can use a washable marker on it.

On our most recent Scotland trip the rental car came with a navigation system (no fee). On all our trip I have Google maps downloaded or offline use in case there there is no service.

Generally one that has big pages - to give more of a long range perspective and hopefully highlight some options on the route

We carry a Garmin NUVI unit (suction cup to windshield). I pre-program all our plans using Basemap. Never have a reception issue since GPS is everywhere. You can use your phone anywhere IF you pre-download the maps for the region while on Wifi at your lodging.

One suggestion, is if you go onto Amazon.co.uk and search for Road Atlas of Great Britain 2024, it will bring up the ones it has. You can highlight and embiggen the front covers to have an initial idea of the type of mappiing inside. Most of the atlases have a sample on the cover.
