A friend and I are in interested in traveling by car for 7-10 days in Scotland in late June. We would rent the car in Edinburgh and return the car again to Edinburgh. Does anyone have a recommendation about the best rental car company to use in Scotland. I would appreciate any advice from experienced travelers in Scotland. Thanks.
I always use Avis. After our time in Edinburgh we took the bus to the airport to pick up the car. There's no need to have a car in the city.
I have been trying to figure this out for myself :) I've been doing some price comparisions and I think that Arnold Clark seems to have good pricing: http://www.arnoldclarkrental.com/
It appears that they will also pick you up and drop you off at the car rental.
I'm still trying to grasp the whole insurance coverage idea. If you look under Travel Tips on this site there is lots of information and also different company recommendations.
Best luck to you!
I used Costco to book my vehicle. At Glasgow Airport my options were Alamo and Enterprise. I picked an Economy for four days at 21GBP/day all in. It was about 24GBP cheaper than Arnold Clark. Also, booking with Costco, I get an additional driver on the contract without additional charge. I more than pay for my Costco membership every year in just rental cars.
We just reserved a car through Auto Europe, which Rick Steves says is his favorite option. They were super helpful and able to answer any questions. We ended up with a good car with enough trunk space for our luggage, etc., and they have a great cancellation policy. They are a consolidator, so they can search all of the companies for the best rate. Ours is actually a Hertz rental.
We decided to pick it up and drop it off at the Edinburgh airport, to avoid driving in the city which might be a bit more of a challenge. (btw - be sure to get an automatic if you're not very experienced with driving in the UK).
I booked with Arnold Clark also. I originally was booked with auto europe but after reading the fine print it seemed like there were a lot of fees that were going to be added on at rental time. So I went with Arnold Clark because the quoted price included everything- insurance, one way fee, gps and it was a reasonable price. I like to know exactly what I can expect to pay instead of getting a surprise when I get there.
I always find it interesting when Arnold Clark gets mentioned as they do not have a brilliant reputation as a retailer 'Arnold Shark'.
Though Sir Arnold Clark passed away this week. First UK car dealer to become a billionaire (£). Thoughts with his family.
We are going with Europcar but I honestly don't know that we will crack the mysterious, final cost until we actually get there. I stressed over this for more than a month (before booking) and looked at several companies and no one seems to be able to give me an answer that I am completely comfortable with. I've had a few nightmares about this! :)
We have not been to Scotland so I am am likely not the best to give a reply - hopefully some others will shed some positive light on car rental in GB. Good luck!
We've used EuropCar and Avis. Both were fine. :)
I used Celtic Legend which is a company based in Edinburgh but uses Arnold Clark (at least that's where my car came from). I found that by going through them, the cost was actually better than directly with Arnold. They were also way better price-wise then Enterprise - especially because I was dropping the car in a different location than pick-up and the GPS was much less expensive as I booked it at the time I reserved the car. Celtic Legend was wonderful to work with and very attentive to my emails and questions - and explained the insurance well, too. And my little car was wonderful! Had absolutely no issues and will use them again next time I go (which I hope is soon)!
