Base town near Cairngorm

An important consideration is whether you will have a car or rely on public transportation.

yes we are traveling by car. We have a 14 day stay starting in Edinburgh, then Oban, Glencoe, Skye, Inverness are all planned but I need something in Aviemore area before returning to Edinburgh for departure. We are traveling September 14-30 2026 so this is last minute planning which can be challenging but fun.

Since you have a car, I suggest going on your preferred booking site and setting the map to include the whole of the Caingorms NP and see what fits your needs and budget.

Last summer we enjoyed our days in Newtonmore. We booked a cottage on the little main street with https://www.wherestagsroar.co.uk/ and enjoyed two great dinners at the Letterbox. The other town just a little north is a bit larger Kingussie. But do check ahead what was affected by the forest fires in the area this summer.

I’d go for Aviemore - there are some nice traditonal buildings on the main road as well as newer stuff.It’s nowhere near as charming as Ballater or Braemar but it’s perfect for hiking in the NP.You can potentially walk from your doorstep to various trails.The loveliest and most varied mountain hikes start from the ski car park (9 miles away) or the Sugar Bowl car park.There is plenty of accommodation including privately run B&Bs though I’d avoid the Coylumbridge Hotel.It’s a buzzy town with a good atmosphere and plenty of you amenities.
We’ve stayed in Newtonmore and Kingussie , using private B&Bs mostly and they are good enough bases but without the same atmosphere or range of amenities/shops etc as Aviemore.And you always have a drive to Aviemore to get to the best hiking.

I'd stay in Aviemore too. scotlandmac is right about Kingussie and Newtonmore. You've got that 15 or 20 minute drive up and back on the A9 to do every day. Aviemore's got everything you need. You've got the advantage of being able to get an Indian or Chinese takeaway or a fish supper that you wouldn't get in the smaller villages too.

Is the Coylumbridge Hotel no good? It's a little way out of Aviemore too, but I'd have thought the Coylumbridge Hotel and Resort is one of the premier places to stay in that general area.

There's several hotels in Aviemore proper, big and small, and I'm sure there will be a reasonable selection of lets on AirBnB and such.

edit: The Coylumbridge gets absolutely slated everywhere you read a review. It's been around for years, but seems to have gone seriously downhill with the current owners.

Gerry - it’s a shame about the Coylumbridge Hotel because years ago it was a great family option and the location is lovely, right in the heart of Rothiemurchus.But yes, it went downhill.It’s run by Britannia Hotels which I believe consistently get a poor write up throughout the UK.That said, we have used its leisure facilities as non residents as it has a lot of activities on site - and amazing animatronic dinosaurs! My wee grandsons loved those, the play area and excellent crazy golf.

To which I ask why have a car, if you aren't willing to use it for a 15 to 20 minute drive? It's not exactly a major trip. It's a great shame the specious reasons which are found on here to avoid staying in Aviemore.

Almost anywhere else in the local area is better to me than staying in Aviemore itself, and no you don't have to use the A9 to get to Aviemore and the surrounding areas, as there are the parallel B roads.

As well as Newtonmore and Kingussie, Carrbridge, Nethy Bridge and Boat of Garten are all good places to stay, or Grantown on Spey for those who need the brighter 'city' lights.

At least the road up to the Cairngorm resort reopened yesterday (Friday) after the devastating wildfire although north of the ski road closures are still in place, on what remains an active fire ground.

Ehhh... I like Aviemore. I've stayed there many times going back to when I was a small child. "Better" is definitely subjective. The other places you mention are just wee villages, even Grantown. It just depends if that's what you want, or if you prefer somewhere that's more akin in it's amenities to a small town. Aviemore's still hardly the heart of the throbbing metropolis.

Yes, it was well known throughout the area in the past. The reviews now are absolutely terrible. It may be useful for a day visit for a swim or such.

I’m with Gerry M on this one - depending on what facilities you want, Aviemore may be the best bet as a base. Newtonmoor and Kingussie are attractive places but they are small with a lot fewer facilities. ...

Actually on my last visit, Aviemore was a lot better than I remembered!

I liked Aviemore when I visited probably about 15 years ago. We stayed in a woodland lodge at the McDonald Resort, very cosy in February.

Another vote for Aviemore for a base. My sister, her 9yo granddaughter, and I traveled by public transportation and had a great stay at 10 Bynack House, https://igloo.scot/rentals/apartment-aviemore-10-bynack-house-aviemore-apartment-close-to-village-centre-416625.html With walking to groceries, buses and taxis for getting to what we wanted to see, we really enjoyed our stay. With a car and short distances to your interests, it should be a really excellent experience.

We did 3 nights in Aviemore. A lot of our trip was 2 night stays at accommodations and the additional night made this feel less busy and, honestly, we would easily have stayed another night or two to have more fun in the area. Hopefully we get a next time to try that.

Thank you all for the feedback & great recommendations. I booked a B&B in Aviermore-Duneroamin & really looking forward to our trip which has been a last min plan. We are hopping from Edinburgh to Glencoe-Oban, Skye, Inverness, Aviemore back to Edinburgh. Hoping to do some nice hikes mixed in with enjoying some castles, good food & culture. Thanks again!
