I realize the castle and grounds are closed in August, but can you at least see it via a drive-by on our way to Ballater and Inverness?

Balmoral castle and grounds are open every day from now until 10th August 2025. So if that fits in with your itinerary you can visit if you choose to.
Otherwise as has been said the castle is surrounded by trees and not visible from the A93. The most you can see is the top of the tower if you drive from Braemar to Ballater. There is a no stopping sign on the road to discourage people from trying to take photographs of this brief glimpse and potentially cause an accident.

We will be in the Pitlochry area towards the end of August. Both of your replies are very helpful and we will plan on going straight to Inverness.
