sorry you have not got any replies so far. Dumfries is not high on any toursit trail so reccommendation will be thin on the ground on this forum. You make get better luck trying Trip advisor or Frommers. Though i have visited Dumfries several times over the years it has just been for football matches when my team have been playing the local team Queen of the South.i have never stayed there overnight.

Though not a big town there are some nice B & Bs in the near vicinity of Dumfries as it is on the Bobbie Burns Trail. Check with the local Tourist Info Office on the town square when you drive into town. We stayed in a nice Town House that also offered dinner. I can't remember name; but I am sure there are similar available. You can look online, but there are many more available that can be booked when you get there. You can also stay in Castle Douglas or Kirkcudbright.

Thank you both - I do appreciate your thoughts. After a closer look we realized that we would have to change our plans a bit as we are travelling by train, and I think this area is best explored by car. So - we have added Edinburgh instead. Not a bad change. :)

I am so glad to hear that you are now going to Edinburgh! I really do want to see the Dumphries area someday, but I've made 11 trips and not made it to that corner of Scotland. I think that you are right that car would be needed. I almost went there a few years ago and a car looked to be a necessity and not just a nicety!
