I’m in Glasgow a few extra days before a tour. I’m interested in the Ayrshire area for the scenery and from an ancestral perspective.
Has anyone experienced the Rabbie’s tours or others of the area?
Thanks
I don't know specifically about the Ayrshire tours, but Rabbies' tours have gotten very good reviews on this forum by people who have taken them.
Thank you!
I can't answer on a broader level , but having a car , I'll be stopping off in Ayr on my way toward The Cairngorms from Northumbria this coming Autumn . My interest is focused on Alloway , just south of Ayr for The Burns museum, and birthplace . Also , The bridge over The River Doon looks appealing ,as its presence in " Tam O'Shanter " figures into Burns' narrative . Also " Brig O' Doon " is the unrelated term for the title of Lerner and Loewe's 1947 musical " Brigadoon " . While Frederick Loewe ( the composer ) was Viennese , and the lyricist , Alan Jay Lerner , was American , they captured the vernacular of Scottish music , beautifully , in two selections here -https://youtu.be/arOJ8wM_9yk and -https://youtu.be/b4GBNgf9vLE Enjoy !
steven, thanks for the Brigadoon mention. I love Brigadoon (although I'm not as crazy about the movie) and the L&L songs are beautiful. The two you linked to are two of my favorites, along with "Come to Me, Bend to Me" ( a beautifully haunting melody) and "I'll Go Home with Bonnie Jean."
Mardee , I'm glad you liked the numbers . They come from the original cast recording of the 2017 production by NY City Center Encores . The rest of the recording ( complete ) is here - https://youtu.be/c_0-hZjPWJQ . I'm also not too fond of the film version , much as I love most of Gene Kelly's work . We have a subscription to the City Center Encores productions , and it was a real treat to come back from Europe , and see this lavish production , ( complete , as always ) with the full orchestra ( forty players ) and the original orchestrations . As I'm retired after nearly forty years of sitting in the pits of Broadway shows , I've now transferred into the audience . Lastly , when you listen to the rest , one of the best songs is " The Love of My Life " Wonderful humor by Lerner and the delivery by Stephanie J. Block , is a knockout !
