Arriving in Edinburgh but starting tour in Inverness

What is the best method for getting to Inverness from the Edinburgh airport? I will be arriving around 8:30 am. Should I book a train or bus seat in advance or wait until I get there?

I would wait.
Edinburgh Airport is a very disorganised one; and you may have to wait on board to deplane, wait in the Customs shed to be processed, then wait to get your luggage.
Last visit there I waited two hours from plane landing till I got out, to find that my friend had been waiting, and she had to pay 26 pounds for parking...for two hours.

Bus. Megabus UK have 5 buses a day from the airport to Inverness. Takes ca 3,5 hours. Sounds like you need to buy ticket in advance from the website. Train takes about an hour longer, leaves from Edinburgh Haymarket station.

Thanks for your reply. I think I will catch the train, I could probably use the extra hour of sleep. MegaBuses don't have great reputations here.

Yeah but then you have to get to Haymarket station in addition to the extra hour.

The above posting by Bill is not the link for the Man in Seat 61. Reported.

Take the tram from the airport to Haymarket. Take a train from Haymarket to Inverness. It's the same amount of time as the bus but I would rather sit on a train for 3.5 hours than a bus. More comfortble, you can move around, stretch your legs, etc.

At some times journey planner suggests you should change at Edinburgh Gateway and Perth rather than Haymarket
