Would like to spend a day or two at the Armadale Castle and the nearby Clan Donald Centre, but am finding lodging in mid-September is quite expensive -- 150-300 pounds a night. As this is my first trip, am wondering if I can find less-expensive lodgings in Portree and with a rental car be able to drive to Armadale for day visits. How long would it take to drive between the two places?? Any lodging suggestions would be welcome.

It is at least an hour between Portree and Armadale. Look at staying near Broadford which is much closer.

I can also recommend the Dornie Hotel, which is on the mainland about 15 min from Kyle of Lochalsh bridge. It's within striking distance of the Glenelg - Kylerhea ferry if you want to take that route instead. By road would be about the same distance to Armadale Castle as Broadford, maybe 10-15 minutes more. Affordable and good friendly no-frills lodging, also with a good affordable restaurant. And it is a stone's throw from Eilean Donan Castle.
