A place in Scotland with a tricky name

Hello friends,

I vaguely remember someone telling me that the best place they've been to in Scotland (is some kind of an island that?) has a number in its name, e.g. 'S100' or something like that... I just can't figure out what name that could be, and I wanted to add it to my list of places to go. Does anyone have any ideas what this place could be? I searched for an island, but now I think maybe it wasn't exactly an island, as I can't find one with a name to match such a description...although I'm sure it must have beautiful scenery...

Many thanks and all the best,
Maria

Could you be talking about NC500? The road that leads 500 miles?
Often dubbed "Scotland's Route 66", this route is celebrated for having some of the most beautiful coastal scenery, white-sand beaches, and dramatic mountain backdrops in the UK:
• The Route: It starts and ends at Inverness Castle, weaving through regions like Wester Ross, Sutherland, and Caithness.

The NC500 came out of a marketing campaign to promote the coastal road heading north from Inverness. It is beautiful, but there's lots of beautiful roads in Scotland, and depending on when you go, you could get stuck on the NC500 behind all the other tourist cars that want to travel that same road. It's like rush-hour traffic in a city.

If it were me, I'd take the NE250, which is a quieter, 250-mile road that runs along the coast, going through fishihg villages, then heading into Speyside whisky country, and the Cairngorms.

I was thinking about this some more, and are you sure they weren't talking about the Isle of Man? That has the Southern 100 road races, called the S100, and it's on an island, and that's probably the closest I can think of that it might be. But of course, the Isle of Man is off the coast of England, not Scotland.

Thank you for your replies! I wrote S100 just to have a letter and a number in the name, I do not remember what the real letter+numbers are, just that the number was not a complex one, i.e. it was a very straightforward number, so I wrote 100 here...Great thought, thanks for sharing, I'll think this through!

Maybe there's a group of, say, 50 particular islands in 1 place, that get a label something 50? Just a thought to add to my note, thanks for your thoughtful replies!

So you heard of a beautiful place in Scotland. (There are thousands of them.) It may be something like S100 but it may not. It may have a number in it but it may not. It may be an island but it may not.

But its a beautiful place.

Even Hercule Poirot couldn't solve this.

The NC500 came out of a marketing campaign

So did the NE250. the K66 (Kintyre 66) ,the SWC 300, the GTR (Galloway Tourist Route)- they are all ways to promote an area, which took an inspiration from the "success" of the NC500 The NE250 (or any of the others) isn't a single road such as Route 66 in the USA, and indeed the NE250 misses out significant parts of the North East of Scotland which merit more tourism, but miss put because they aren't on the NE250.

And anyway the NC500 has lots of offshoots or diversions from the main route.

There are no places I can recall with numbers in their names. There are the tourist routes as noted above such as the NC 500, and of course ordinary road numbers have a letter (A, B, M) and then a number. Do you have any more information?
