yes It is a Flybe flight but operated by Loganair .takes about 30 minutes from Inverness, planes will originate in Glasgow or Edinburgh, stop in Inverness and then on to Kirkwall. these are very small planes so your luggage will go in the hold even if you are hand luggage only unless it is a very small bag.but it takes no time at all getting you luggage at Inveness or kirkwall

Thanks. We plan only a day in the Orkneys then fly to Aberdeen. Any advice on making the most of seeing the sights in the Orkneys? A day tour out of Kirkwall???

most of the major sites are well spread out, either hire a car for the day or a private guide with car. you can do things using public transport but it is difficult.

Most of the main sites are also on the Mainland of Orkney, or on the islands down the Churchill barriers so easily accessible from Kirkwall. Please note it is just 'Orkney'! ;-)

There are a lot of sites on Orkney. There is definitely a group that are on the Mainland. That would include, The Ring of Brogdar, the Ness of Brogdar, Scara Brae, Maeshowe, the Stones of Stenness, the Bishop's Palace, the Earl's Palace and Birsay, St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall. You cannot see all of these in just one day. You will have to make choices. There is also a wonderful distillery--Highland Park--and various artistic/cultural sites. You should explore this website to learn more about Orkney. Sites that are not on the Mainland include the Churchill Barriers, The Italian Chapel, St. Margaret's Hope, the Hoxa Tapestries, the Eagles Tomb, the Isle of Hoy, the Balfour Castle....
