I stayed in Edinburgh twice this June/July - 3 nights/2 nights. The first stay was at the Ibis Styles St Andrew Square, the 2nd at Parliament House Hotel.

Ibis Styles:
Pros: great location, really nice staff, excellent breakfast buffet
Con: Tiny room even though I’d upgraded to a balcony room, fairly expensive
I would definitely stay here again.

Parliament House:
Pros: Giant room! Very nice staff, fairly good location but I liked the St Andrew Square location better

Cons: Elevator was broken the whole time. I was on the 3rd floor and had 73 steps up to my floor. When I arrived the guy at reception carried my bag up although I am a light packer and could have managed. My room was noisy - it was warm so had the window open as far as it would go (about 4 inches) so got noise from Howie’s restaurant below and on the street behind. Also got some people noise from the bus stop opposite Howie’s.
I might stay here again if I couldn’t get into the Ibis or if the prices was a lot better. I’d have to think about those stairs as someone else mentioned the elevator actually doesn’t go all the way to the top floor!

Hopefully you won’t pick up the car until you leave Edinburgh.

No advice on your other stops as I was on Orkney and Shetland for most of my time.

If staying in Edinburgh, don't pick up your car until you are leaving the city. Best car rental in Scotland is Arnold Clark. You can pick up your car at the Sighthill location and return to the Paisley location near the Glasgow airport. You can book directly with Arnold Clark or with their agent, Celtic Legend. Sometimes you can get free second driver through one or the other. Both companies are easy to work with.

Without a budget, it's difficult to give recommendations.

We stayed at the Tigerlily in New Town on our last trip in 2023 and enjoyed the hotel. Many visitors prefer to be closer to the Royal Mile.

On Skye, Portree is the largest town and will have the most options for both rooms and dining. Accommodations book up quickly on Skye, so when you find something that will work for you, don't hesitate to book it.

What will you be doing with your time in Inverness to warrant 4 nights? We've never stayed in Inverness, preferring other areas of Scotland.

You don't mention a budget, so my suggestions go from budget to luxury.

For Glasgow airport we always stay at the Holiday Inn Express. It's a short walk to the airport terminal. Hotel is clean, quiet (despite its location next to the motorway and very close to the airport), with a small restaurant and free breakfast.

Inverness has 4 Premier Inns - a popular chain on here. One is right in the centre on the banks of the river Ness. However, it doesn't have a car park. My own choice when I've needed to stay in Inverness is the AC Marriott. It's also right on the river but does have a car park. It was very comfortable, very clean and the breakfast was superb.

In Edinburgh, if you'd like a B&B then the absolutely brilliant 2 Cambridge Street would be my choice. It's in a very good location and the couple who run it are fabulous. It's stylish and has lots of little extra touches.

For Skye, if you want somewhere really special then how about Kinloch Lodge? It's in the south of the island on the Sleat peninsula, convenient for the Cullin mountains, Fairy Pools etc. It's on the banks of a sea loch on its own private road. The restaurant is fantastic (I ate lunch there last week) and the rooms are split between two buildings, the original very old building and a much newer building with the feel of an old Scottish castle. We stayed there a couple of years ago when they did a 'locals' special' and were given a lovely room in the new building with panoramic water views. There was a comfy lounge with an honesty bar and it was a piece of heaven. We bought a two night stay with dinner and breakfast for our son and daughter in law last Christmas and they said it was the best place they'd ever stayed. It's only a 5 minute drive to Broadford for other restaurant choices, although there are also a few nice places on the Sleat peninsula for dining too.

We stayed in two places in Inverness - before and after a rabbies's tour up to orkney.

The Eildon guesthouse was very reasonably priced and very typically Scottish B&B - friendly host and walking distance to town. The second place was the art house apartments

This place was much more high-end- a building with several apartments inside. It had a washing machine, king size bed and it was right downtown.

We liked both places but they were very different!

We stayed in an ancient stone cottage on a farm on the banks of Loch Tay for a week. A life-level experience that we will never forget. May not be what you’re looking for, however.

We have had two lovely stays just outside Inverness in Bunchrew House which is a bit of a gem of a place, striking building in a beautiful location.Minutes drive away from the busy city itself right on the sea.Food was good.

I would ask the same question - why Inverness in particular for 4 nights?

Skye - we usually stay in the family home but have also enjoyed Kinloch Lodge though prices have gone a bit nuts, (similar to other accommodation.) Have been quite impressed by the Cuillin Hills hotel above Portree, certainly for Sunday lunch and those amazing views over the sea to the Cuillin.

The Kingshouse Hotel at the start of Glencoe, all on its own on the moorland, fab views, had a top notch makeover a few years back.Very smart.Stayed once though breakfast was very average; dinner has been good overall.

Enjoyed B&B Edinburgh on Rothesay Terrace, very atmospheric.Even better, The Bonham though we got a good off peak deal, otherwise, eye watering in price I think! Very elegant and classy and first rat cocktails.
