Aberdeen or Inverness and no car.

Hello,

I have 3 extra nights at the end of a trip to England. We were thinking of flying to Aberdeen or Inverness (both have airports) for a short 3 day stay before going home. This would the last weekend of September 2025 before we fly out of Heathrow. I know this is a very last minute and spur of the moment thing, but the rest of my trip is fully planned out, I promise.

A few years ago we went to Edinburgh, Stirling, Glasgow, Isle of Skye, Oban and Glencoe, but we didn’t see Inverness, Aberdeen, or anywhere in that part of Scotland. This short trip attempts to slightly rectify that shortfall. We also do want to return to Scotland for a much longer trip in future as well.

What do are the best sights in these cities? Where do you recommend we go? We will be relying on the train or a paid tour guide. Are there guides operating in late September?

Thank you.

If you go to Aberdeen, you want to be out in the countryside, which is gorgeous. You can see castles fixed up fancy (Craigievar, my absolute favorite) to picturesque ruins on the North Sea (Dunnottar, just south of Stonehaven). Stay at some country pile or manor ....I am jealous just thinking about it. Aberdeenshire is SO lovely.

Both cities have their pluses and minuses. I agree with Kim that the areas around these places are the high points.

Rabbies runs one day tours out of both of these cities. Perhaps one of their tours might call out to you.

I have flown in and out of both airports and fortunately they are both fairly small.
