Aberdeen in August

I'll be attending a conference in Aberdeen in August, and will be arriving a few days ahead of time for a bit of sightseeing. Originally I figured I'd just stay in Aberdeen proper, but as I dug into things I thought Stonehaven would be a nice place to base for a few days. I'm flying directly into Aberdeen after an overnight flight, so my thought is to take public transit upon arrival, exploring Stonehaven on the first day when I'm jet lagged, rather than trying to figure out how to drive on the left immediately. Day 2 would be coming back to explore Aberdeen itself, and renting a car from there. With a car, on Day 3 I would then be able to explore a bit of Royal Deeside on my own, before returning to Aberdeen to return the car and check into my hotel for the conference. Are there any obvious flaws in this plan I should be aware of? Of course I will request an automatic when I reserve the car, having never driven a manual before :-)

Linnae, your plan sounds like a very good one - renting the car for the one day of exploring is smart. You’ve probably researched what Aberdeenshire has to offer, but I’ll put my $.2 in. The whole area has many castles to explore, some of which are ruins. Don’t miss Dunnottar Castle near Stonehaven and possibly New Slains Castle. I loved my Rabbies Guided day trip to Dunnottar Castle and Royal Deeside, Banchory, Braemar, Falls of Feugh, River Dee, Muir of Dinnet. With a car, you could easily see some of the same sites. We had a wonderful walk through the woods at Muir of Dinnet.

Aberdeen is nice to explore on foot. I enjoyed seeing the Marischal College and toured the Provost Skenes House. I hear the Maritime Museum is great - I didn’t have enough time to visit on my trip last year.

Have fun in Aberdeen. If you would like some ideas of where to eat, I would be glad to give you my suggestions.
