7 Night Itinerary with Teenagers - Opinion Please

Hello! We are taking our children to Scotland this summer. Unfortunately, the last week in July is the only time that works for us (and all other tourists of course). My 18-year-old daughter has been begging to go for years, and this is her graduation trip. My 15-year-old son is also joining. We are not Harry Potter or Outlander people. We are interested in beautiful scenery and culture. Here is current itinerary:
-Fly into Edinburgh and enjoy staying 2 nights
-Take the Train to Inverness, rent a car, and drive to Ullapool, stay the night
-Drive to Isle of Skye and stay two nights
-Drive to Glencoe area and stay a night
-Drive to Glasgow, Stay a night and fly out

Does this sound reasonable or too much? Thank you in advance for any guidance! We have really tried to research but its overwhelming! Thank you!

Hi, Lala,

It really is overwhelming! There is so much to see and do. Your itinerary definitely sounds doable. Have you planned your route from Ullapool to Skye? Once you leave Skye, are you going back across the bridge, or are you taking the ferry to Mallaig? If you haven't already thought about it, I'd recommend taking the ferry to Mallaig, if space is available on your scheduled day.

There are several routes from Ullapool to Kyle of Lochalsh for your visit to Skye. Some are more scenic than others.

Have you made accommodation arrangements for Skye and Glencoe? Finding rooms for four of you could be challenging if you haven't already done so.

There are a lot of good hikes on Skye and in Glencoe. Do you have any planned, or do you you need some suggestions?

Thank you for taking your children to Scotland! I hope that they enjoy it so much that they will make future trips on their own. And congratulations to your daughter on her upcoming graduation!

Best wishes,

Mike (Auchterless)

Your plan is doable. The hardest part will be finding accommodations on Skye for the 4 of you.

See what you can book on Skye ASAP. This will determine if you need to make a plan B. There are many worthwhile places to visit in Scotland if Skye becomes too difficult.

Let us know if you need more help.

Are you talking about this July?

Have you booked accommodation yet? July is peak holiday time and many places on Skye will have been fully booked for months....

Is there any particular reason you are going to Ullapool? What route are you planning on taking from Ullapool to Skye? If teh scenic route round the coast via Gairloch and Applecross that is going to take 5- 6 hours. This is only going to give one and a bit days for Skye. The quickest route has you driving back to Garcve (which you did the previous day) and then picking up te A832 and 890 to Kyle of Lochalsh. Would it make sende to skip Ullapool and allocaate an extra night to Skye?

At this late date, I'd find lodging first for the Isle of Skye and Glencoe, then plan the driving and activities around that.

I tried to get 2 rooms in the Glencoe area. I searched in March within our budget for our May trip and was unsuccessful, so we stayed 2 nights in Fort William instead.

Thanks so much for the input! This is all very helpful! We have just booked airfare. So yes, where we can find accommodations may determine where and when we go.
Regarding Ullapool, it was just a thought of somewhere to stay in the northern country. A bit weary of spending more than 2 nights in Skye due to the crowds. We are very open to suggestions or alternatives!

I wouldn't be put off Skye 'because of crowds'. If you are willing to ignore the instagram brigade and branch out into the less photographed and vlogged sites you will have no problems finding solitude. Use Walk Highlands website to research the many, many hiking paths and find your own slice of natural splendour. Your issue will be finding accommodation..... and that extends to Ullapool. Inverness will offer more accommodation (and cheaper options such as Premier Inn) but if you want to see Skye and can find accommodation then I'd say go for it.
