7 days in Scotland

We will be in Scotland 7 full days in early September. I've laid out the following itinerary but am looking for some help with the final couple of days.

Arrive in Edinburgh and spend 2 full days
Rent car and drive to Pitlochry and spend night (via St Andrews)
Drive to Inverness and spend night
Drive to Skye and spend 2 nights (or am open to alternate destination)
Drive to Glasgow spend night (fly out the following morning

Thanks for your input.

For me, this would be a rushed trip.

First question, have you booked your accomodations ion Skye? The island has limited rooms that are usually booked far in advance. That may decide how your trip is organized.

Your drive from Skye to Glasgow will be minimum 5 hours without stopping for a bite or to take in the views while driving through the spectacular Glencoe Valley.

What are your must sees in Scotland? Castles, ruins, gardens, historic sites,...?

Skye is a spectacular place, but it also requires some time and effort to reach, navigate, and depart for places on the mainland. Besides what jeanm mentions that can extend the driving time, there’s also the potential for severe rainstorms. We drove through an extended torrential downpour driving from Inverness to Skye, then again when we departed Glencoe, heading east. Traffic, along with the heavy rain, added to the challenge.

If you didn’t make it all the way onto Skye this trip, consider Fort William or Glencoe, due southwest of Inverness. They’re in the vicinity of the highest peaks in the U.K.

Thank you for the input. I have not booked accommodations in Skye but did find a couple of options. It seems like visiting Skye in such a short period may be too optimistic. I will start researching the Glencoe and Fort William areas.

I was also considering Oban or Isle of Mull. Any insights?

In September 2023 we spent 2 nights about 20 minutes outside of Oban at Barcaldine Castle. We took Westcoast Tours 2 Island tour to Mull and Iona on our full day and thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you decide to take your car to Mull, you will need to reserve space on the ferry. Do a search for recent posts about Mull on this site for more info.
