5 days in Edinburgh

We will be in Edinburgh for 5 days in October. Would appreciate ideas for several day trips.

Check out Rabbies. They offer several single day trips out of Edinburgh. You can see castles, the Highlands...etc.
We used them in March and enjoyed our day out.

There is enough in Edinburgh to keep you busy for a full 3 days if you tour the castle and Holyrood Palace, explore the Royal Mile, and then New Town...also Dean Village, Arthur's Seat or Calton Hill.

you might also consider taking the train to Glasgow for a full day of exploring there....

1) Forth Bridge > Falkland Palace > St Andrews
2) Linlithgow Castle > Falkirk Wheel > Stirling Castle
3) Border Abbeys - Kelso, Jedburgh, Melrose

  • Glasgow--take the train
  • St. Andrews--take the train
  • Stirling--take the train
  • Birnum/Dunkeld--take the train to walks in the hills of Perthshire.
  • Abbotsford--Scott's home--train to Tweedbank and then half hour walk or 4 minute taxi. :) You can also take ten minute taxi to Melrose Abbey.

And then there are many, many tours that you do. There are border tours to Rosylyn, also to the other abbeys.

Another vote for Rabbies. I did a two day Highland tour with them out of Edinburgh. Great guide and value for the price.
