The 2027 Open will be at St. Andrews. Is staying in Edinburgh feasible? Certainly, a hotel room in Edinburgh can be more readily obtained than a room at hotels closer to St. Andrews.
If not feasible, any suggestions as to where to stay, though please note that I am interested in spending a ton of money to go to the Open.
It is feasible, but a fair commute.
Much closer and easier to reach (and therefore a lot cheaper) is Dundee.
Hotel prices in Dundee are usually a fraction of those in Edinburgh.
Just had a look at one budget option I know- Jollys Hotel in Broughty Ferry (a suburb of Dundee). They have a single room for all 8 nights at £945. While a lot more than normal it's probably a better price than Edinburgh when you take commuting cost and time into account.

I can see the Corn Exchange at Dunfermline for £845 for the same 8 nights. Again quite a bit closer
Just had a look at the Salutation at Perth - one of "my" hotels in the area (admittedly much the same travel time as Edinburgh)- room only single £677.20.
I agree with Stuart. Dundee is so much closer to St Andrews - you would lose a significant amount of time commuting back and forth to Edinburgh, were you to stay there. And Dundee is also significantly cheaper than Edinburgh
When my friends and I went to St Andrews last year, I stayed in Dundee because I couldn't stomach the St Andrews hotel prices - it was easy to get back and forth on the bus.
A third for Dundee. It is an interesting city in its own right, and there are other places around it. If you don't fancy Dundee, another to add would be Perth.
How are you planning to get around -rental car or public transportation? I would find a 1½ to 2 hour commute by car to get old really fast.
Are you planning to attend the entire week? What's your budget?
University of St. Andrews still has 1 week packages available in walking distance of the Old Course.
I spend about 2-3 months a year in Dundee. (I left earlier this week and will be back in two weeks.)
It is easy to get from Dundee to St. Andrews. Thirty minutes by bus. And they run frequently.
If you can, lock in a hotel room now. I can tell you that at the hotel I spend most of my time, they normally charge 75-125 GBP per night depening on day and time of the year.
During the Open in 2022, the hotel was getting 1000 GBP per night. They were sold out and most of the rooms were taken by corporate sponsors.

I would be using public transportation. And I would be attending perhaps two days.
And I hope my friends in the UK can forgive me, but if I am going to really splurge, it will be on the Masters. And the US Open next year is at Pebble Beach. If I were to attend the Open, it would be only part of a greater trip, and I would do it only if the pricing is relatively resonable.

I would say that if any accomodation prices within an hours drive seem reasonable for those dates it's because the owners haven't noticed the Open is coming - so book soon!
"Normal" public transport schedules will probably go out of the window, but at least they are a clue to what's possible.
My husband and daughter's ticket package included accommodations, but it wasn't cheap. I did think the price was reasonable compared to what my husband paid for tickets to a college football national championship game a few years ago. Do you already have your tickets? When they bought theirs, tickets were going fast. My husband grew up in Augusta but the Master's has made sure that local people can't attend unless they buy high-priced tickets from a reseller. Augusta National reads the obituaries in Augusta so they can take back the badges so people can't inherit them.
I do not have tickets, but I was thinking the tickets could always be obtained. My appreciation is that with ticket pricing, we are not talking the Masters or Wimbledon near the end of the tournament.
I would like to see the Open. I do not have to see the Open so expensive packages are off the table.

We attended the Open at Royal Liverpool in 2023 and were impressed by the public transit options. Between the train and walk it was about an hour but comfortable. Far, far superior to our experience in Rome for the Ryder Cup. We decided on Liverpool to have the option for public transit and to have additional options for the days when we did not have tickets.
I just submitted our ballot request for next year. Since we won’t know which days we may be awarded tickets, I reserved a Premier Inn in Edinburgh to cover all of the days we requested. The rooms were fairly reasonable at this point even with the fully refundable rate in the event we aren’t selected for the ballot. I considered some the closer towns, but planning to rely on public transit, I thought a larger city might be better. They added additional fairly direct trains from Liverpool to Hoylake in 2023 and I was hoping they might do the same next year.
The Masters is on my list as well, but we have a conflict for next year. Hopefully in 2028!
