2-3 week road trip. Could use some advice.

We love road trips! We like to settle into a base for a few days and explore around it. Would appreciate suggestions about our route, ( especially the order) and towns in which to base ( as well as how long to spend in each area) .

We will fly in and out of Edinburgh, staying 2/3 nights upon arrival. Will then pick up a car. We want to spend time in Central Scotland( the Trossachs, Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle) , West Highlands( Glencoe Valley, Oban, Glenfinnan) the Isle of Mull ( including boat trip to Iona, Staffa), Isle of Skye, and the Fife fishing villages( Elie, St. Monans, Crail, etc. any advice would be very welcome. We are ready to book!

If this is for this summer you may find that accommodation outside of Edinburgh is already pretty booked up. Especially true for Skye, and I'd imagine Mull might be similar. Best to try to put together a rough outline and start looking for accommodation. At the moment the Fife fishing villages look like an outlier to me. Skye to the Fife coast (if that's how you're organising it) would be minimum 6 hours driving, without any stops for sightseeing.

I might start by going up through the Fife Villages that day, ending in Dundee. Three nights in Dundee- next day explore Dundee which can easily fill a whole day, the day after Arbroath, Montrose and Dunnottar Castle. You could even add another day for Glamis Castle and/or Scone Palace.

Then down the A90 to Perth (see the Stone of Destiny/stone of Scone at the new museum), on to Stirling Castle, end the day at Callander. Use that as a base for Loch Lomond and the Trosssachs. Comfortably three nights here will not be overdoing it. Maybe even slightly short changing it.

Then north on the A84/A85 via Lochearnhead and Crianlarich to Oban for an early evening ferry to Mull. Three, four or even five (if you can manage it) on Mull for Iona, Staffa, puffins, Ulva and Calgary etc.

Then the Tobermory to Kilchoan ferry, the B8007 and A861 to Lochailort junction, Turn right here on the A830 for Glenfinnan, then retrace your steps to Mallaig for an early evening ferry to Armadale, Skye.

After your time on Skye, return via the Skye Bridge , the A87 and the A82. Overnight in Fort William, Ballachulish, Glencoe or Kinlochleven then back to Edinburgh.

I'm not sure how many nights we have got to, and if you have the time. You may have to cut and change it to suit the time available.

Thanks for your guidance. The places I mention are places we arrived at after lots of reading and you tube research and we really want to include them all. The idea is to choose bases in each area ( Trossachs, Glencoe, Skye, Mull) stay for several days and do day trips from there.

It would be great to arrive at and stay in one of the Fife fishing villages for last several days at tge end of our visit. We could stop and stay somewhere for a night en route from Skye. (?)

Someone suggested starting with Skye and reversing order. Thoughts about that?

We want to see but also absorb what we experience.

Thank you!

It really doesn't make to go directly from Edinburgh to Skye. It's a 6 hour drive and goes through other areas on your list. So if you want to do Fife at the end then perhaps,

  1. Edinburgh 3 nights
  2. Trossachs - e.g. Callander or similar 3 nights
  3. West Highlands - e.g. Fort William 3 nights
  4. Mull - 3 nights (NB could reverse number 3 and 4 and do Mull then Fort William)
  5. Skye - 3 nights
  6. Stop en route to Fife, e.g. Pitlochry - 1 night
  7. Fife coast - 3 nights

That's 19 nights. Of course 3 nights only gives you 2 full days in that location, so you'd perhaps want to extend some of the stops (especially Skye as it's big island and the main tourist 'must sees' are spread out).

Again, if this is for this summer you have left it really late to book accommodation especially on Skye. And bear in mind that in summer most self catering accommodation (i.e. holiday cottages not hotels or B&Bs) require 7 night bookings.

Is this doable with regard to travel times being reasonably relaxing?

Edinburgh 2-3 nights
Base in Trossachs area 4 nights
Mull 4 nights
Skye 4 nights
Glencoe 3 nights
Fife Villages 2-3 nights

Yes that would work. Glencoe to Fife is the longest of the drives. You'd want to go south to Crianlariach and then head east towards Perth/Stirling and then east again towards the coast.

Yes, allowing for the times when you are on the ferry you should never be on the road for more than about 3 hours.

For the Mull and Skye ferries factor in that you need to be in line at the port 45 minutes before sailing time.

Last June we stayed in the Fife village of Anstruther for 2 nights. Loved our stay there. On our one full day we drove to St. Andrews, did some sightseeing there, then we drove to Crail, and spent a couple hours there. Walked along the Fife Coastal Path for a short distance. Had lunch in Crail.

This is where we stayed:
Waterfront Inn

The included breakfast is delicious!

For our dinners, we ate one night at The Ship Inn in Elie and another night at the Anstruther Fish Bar. I recommend both restaurants.

We spent 16 nights in Scotland, and loved every place we visited, but hands down, the two most beautiful areas we visited are Skye and Glen Coe. (Didn't have time to visit Mull.) Spent 4 nights in Portree on Skye at the Viewfield House Hotel, and 2 nights in Glencoe Village at the Glencoe Inn. I definitely recommend both places.

For Skye I followed this blog for a roadtrip around Skye.

In Glen Coe, be sure to drive down the Glen Etive Road. Spectacular scenery. A highlight of our trip.

What month is your trip?

After a similar road trip as you've outlined, one of our last stops was in Crail. It was really perfect for us. After doing a lot of hiking on the front end of the trip and taking in the amazing views of the Highlands, Sands of Morar, the Mallaig ferry, more hiking and enjoying the stunning vistas of Skye, castles, so so much....taking time to explore the charm of the small Fife Fishing Villages and walk on a few beaches, felt like the perfect way to shift our pace...and we felt like we got to take in more of the variety of Scotland. In Crail, we particularly enjoyed visiting the family owned pottery shop, grabbing coffee at the gallery and just enjoying a leisure stroll. And yes, the fish and chips in Crail really does live up to the hype! From Crail - Anstruther, Pittenweem, etc. are all short drives and each town is SO charming. You can pop in and out of each town as you head back to Edinburgh. I do recommend giving yourself time to check out Culross as well. Hope this helps.

For anyone reading this and planning to travel from Tobermory to Skye via the Kilchoan ferry please note that you need to refuel your car at Tobermory.

I have just been advised that the Ferry Stores at Kilchoan have had no fuel since before Christmas. It is not clear if this is due to old infrastructure or other reasons.
