What ideas does everyone have for sightseeing as we drive from Oban to York? Is Inveraray Castle castle worth the stop? We'll drive by Loch Lomand, but anything to stop and see, or just photo ops? What other recommendations? Where to stop for lunch? We'd probably stretch the 6 hours driving time to a 10-11 hours road trip adventure.
Inveraray Castle might be slightly out of your way given the roads in Argyll. If you go via the west coast you would pass by Drumlanrig Castle and New Lanark. Via the east coast the road would take you past Lindisfarne, Alnwick, and Bamburgh Castle. Also the Angel of the North. For places to stop for lunch it probably depends on your time table for the day.
If you go down the west side of Loch Lommond, the scenery is pretty good, but there's not much to do unless you stop to take a couple of forest walk trails.
If you cut over through Stirling as you were thinking about in the other thread, it adds about a half hour to the drive and you get to see the castle. I think it's not so hot, but am in the small minority. That's going to put you real close to lunch by the time you're done.
If you're interested in stone circles, there's a good one (Castlerigg) just east of Keswick in the Lake District. That deviation would add another half hour of driving time, maybe three-quarters of an hour, total.
