I have never traveled to Scotland
Wold love some thoughts on our genitive plan
This site has helped put an outline trip would appreciate any other suggestions
I do not have a car and will be using the trains to get around
2 nights in Edinburgh
4 day 3 night night tour of Skye and the Harry Potter train a Scottish Tours. From Edinburg
Will stay 1 night in Pitchiochy when we stop on day 4 instead of going back to Edinburgh
Train to inveness 2 nights
Then train to Glasgow for 3 nights or to Oban for 1 night
Or any other suggestion?
It is some what overwhelming planning a trip with no reference
So I guess I could use some opinions on the last 5 days
I will be flying home from Glasgow
Than you
I believe most people go to Oban as a jumping-off point for Mull, Iona and perhaps also Staffa--islands visited by ferry. I don't think one night there would allow you to take a two- or three-island tour. Weather in western Scotland can be very wet (though May isn't quite as bad as mid-summer in that regard, if you go by the statistics), so going somewhere only briefly when you want to spend time outdoors is a risky proposition. Oban isn't a bad place, but I'd be inclined to apply that night to a different destination. Two nights in Edinburgh is very short, especially if that is your first stop in Europe, where you might arrive jetlagged.
Check train schedules on scotrail.com and, if necessary, bus schedules on travelinescotland.com. Note that many routes run quite infrequently.
Rick has a guidebook to Scotland.
You obviously have to spend a final night in Glasgow, but would suggest three nights might be too much. Oban is nice if you are planning on visiting Mull but not as a destination in itself. From Glasgow there are a number of potential day trips - go to the Rabbie’s tours web site, they offer about 10 one day tours from Glasgow. Have not used them myself but the are well recommended on this forum
Opinions about Glasgow obviously vary. I spent about a week there in 2019, mostly going to art museums and tracking down Charles Rennie Mackintosh buildings. I'm planning to return next year to go to the reopened Burrell Collection and revisit a few favorites.
Thank you everyone
Hi thanks for the response so coming from Inveness I have 4 days to go somewhere and end in Glasgow
Should I consider any other area? Or should we go to Oban and do a trip to Mull?thanks
