1 week home base in Highlands with kids

We are flying in to Inverness in the beginning of August 2025, and we hope to find a home base in which to stay a week. My spouse and I have two kids, ages 8 and 11, and will be renting a car for this week, then driving to Edinburgh to drop it off for our stay there (we already have booked lodging in Edinburgh).

We will have travelled for more than 13 hours by the time we get to Inverness, so I'm not sure we will be up for a long drive to get to our lodgings, but we'd love to pick a home base that's lovely but also near some day trips.

We like easy-to-moderate hikes and gorgeous scenery; my kids love castles and experiences like farm visits. We'd love to be by small shops like bakeries, cafes, pubs and the like, and not have to go too far for groceries, as I predict one of my kids will have a hard time adjusting to the new place and food. Walking tours or lake cruises would be great, but not required. A kid-allowed whiskey tour would be amazing as well. I am entranced by the idea of going to Skye, but I'm not sure how we can make it work. We will also plan on going to a Highlands games at some point, but there are many during that week, so I think we can do that no matter where we stay.

I was just planning on booking a week in Inverness, but then I started going through the forum and it sounded like we could probably find something even more lovely, but then I got a bit overwhelmed with the options! Fort William, Nairn, and Grantown on Spey all seem like a good place to start?

Don’t hop in a car after that flight.

Are you aware of what happens in Edinburgh in August?

There is a rail station at Inverness Airport for trains into Inverness and to Nairn on arrival day. The airport also has hourly bus service to Nairn, and half hourly bus service to central Inverness, for arrival day.
Both are 30 minute rides, and the Nairn route especially is often run with a double decker for good views.
You can then return to the airport next day to pick up a rental car by bus or train.

Yes, I'm aware of Fringe; we already have our lodgings booked there and since we've been to Edinburgh before, I feel like we're set to have a good, if chaotic, time and I'm not worried about it.

Why wouldn't I just pick up a car at the airport and drive to Nairn, if that's where we're staying? Why go back to the airport the next day? I am not concerned about driving in general, but acknowledging that my kids aren't going to want to drive three hours to, say, Skye that day. Would you recommend Nairn as a home base for a week?

I'm fully admitting that I am still planning my trip, but this is where I would have wanted to stay but our group was too large:

I share because you specifically mentioned farm visits and you'll have a built in opportunity to see the sheep dogs work. It's also very close to Clava Cairns and Culloden if you were thinking of visiting either of those spots.

Our group of 2 families with teens loved staying at the Highland Club in Fort Augustus, south of Inverness, a couple summers ago. Stunning location right on Loch Ness and the Caledonian Canal. Self-catering apartments and plenty of activities within the resort including a lovely indoor pool and billiards room. Plenty of hikes, boat trips, castles, and sightseeing in the area.

The town Fort Augustus is cute and walkable, and we enjoyed watching the boats go through the locks. From Fort Augustus, we did a day trip to Culloden, Fort George, and Inverness for the evening.

The grocery store we visited in Ft Augustus was quite small with a limited selection--if you stay here, you may want to grocery shop in Inverness before driving to Fort Augustus.

Great suggestion for Fort Augustus. Location would tick lots of boxes for you. You’re also not far from Fort William for groceries.

Such great suggestions; thanks!

We have booked Leanach Farms' cottage, which is so budget friendly, and the farm setting is so ideal. But Fort Augustus looks like a really perfect location; we might consider that instead (Leanach Farms has a generous cancellation policy). I deeply appreciate all the insights here.
