Travelling to Edinburgh - Suggestions for a good "home base" for 6 nights?

We are a group of six (3 couples) traveling to Scotland in late September 2017. We would like to find a good"Home Base" for six nights that will allow us access to points of interest within a round trip drive in a day. The sights we have planned to see are: 1) the old city and castle in Edinburgh; St. Andrews golf; Stirling Castle; Any Whiskey distillery tours (haven't chosen any yet); or any other suggestions?

We can share an apartment that has at least 3 twin rooms (all of us are 6' or taller so twin beds work best) and at least two full bathrooms. Bed and Breakfasts are great or small hotels - first time to the area so we are open to anything!

Thanks for your help!

We've used http://www.apts-edinburgh.co.uk and had a wonderful stay. We had a 3 br; 2 bath (master is ensuite) across from St. Giles on the Royal Mile. Much less expensive than either a B&B or hotel. And, it was convenient to most things. Getting groceries was a bit of a challenge but we managed. We used the apartment for 4 days. The unit was clean, well-appointed and had everything we needed--including a washer/dryer in the kitchen. The apartment was on the second floor and no elevator. Stairs were narrow but it was a delightful old building.

We've used other companies for apartment rentals in Edinburgh in the past and never had a problem. Going out a bit further (within Edinburgh but not on the Royal Mile) gave us a neighborhood experience. Within 24 hours, everyone on the street knew we were visiting. One of the local shop owners (Roberto from Napoli) closed his shop and made dinner for us the last night in town. And, after one visit the bartender at the corner pub was pulling our pints as we walked in. Authentic RS experiences.

Overall, it's nice to be able to unpack and have room to spare. Enjoy Edinburgh--it's one of our favorite cities.

I've stayed at the Knight's Residence also and it is lovely. Very Clean, comfortable and roomy, with the added bonus of a washing machine in the kitchen. There's a Sainsbury's very close by for stocking up on groceries.
