This past summer we went to The Gardner's Cottage for our special meal during a visit to Edinburgh. I've eaten in several wonderful restaurants in Edinburgh, but this one was a little different. First of all, the food was superb! It's a set menu and it truly wonderful. Secondly, you sit at communal tables. It's a very small place so you must have a reservation. And, the setting is charming. It's at the foot of Calton Hill and has a small walled garden. We were able to take a taxi to the restaurant. While it is communal dining, we didn't have much conversation between groups the night we were there. There was a family from maybe Russia at one end which posed a language barrier. There was one couple who we recognized the next in our breakfast room back at the hotel! We got the five-course meal and were very happy with our choice.
