Stayed at this fantastic 5-star traditional Bed and Breakfast November 13/15, 2024. Arrived mid-afternoon (an hour late due to train delay) and co-host Paul (after history/orientation of Barony House) made a great recommendation of optimizing my remaining time that day (Craigmillar Castle and Sheep Heid Inn for dinner...both perfect)!
I stayed in the Baroness Room and every detail was lovingly created by my hosts. Co-host Susan is a gifted artist/ceramist, and her beautiful butterflies in my room, and the vines and flowers in the breakfast room are beautiful. The breakfasts are just splendid, with pastries/bread made fresh every morning, homemade yoghurt, and everything either scratch-made by Susan or locally sourced.
Paul and Susan are very passionate about their Barony House...and this is completely evident in their desire for their guests to have the best possible experience while there. Clever things like a button in the lobby that, when pushed, will call a cab for you ASAP, a decanter of sherry in the room, and a cozy sitting room with an "honesty bar" containing a lovely selection of whiskeys for our enjoyment were all great. Also, the only place on my 3 1/2 week tour of Paris, Tuscany and Scotland with a sink stopper that actually worked!
The location is great for access to Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile and Holyrood Palace. A pleasant 2 mile walk, or quick cab ride gets you there...I appreciated that Barony House is in more of a residential area than the city center. Also, several good eateries are a short walk away.
I had to leave early in the morning for a flight (6:30am) and Susan had a breakfast bag ready for me...with a fresh-made pastry (still warm), yogurt/fruit/granola cup, cheese/biscuits, trail mix, etc...all so perfect for my continued journey!
I hope you have the opportunity to stay here...I will definitely be back!
