Recommendations for splurge, birthday dinner in Oslo?

Hello! Would like to treat the hubby to a fantastic birthday dinner when we’re in Oslo in September. We much prefer the standard 3-4 course dinner (à la carte or prix fixe) to the gazillion small courses menu that, in our experience, has usually included a few unwelcome surprises. Since it’s his birthday, somewhere on the water would be terrific, too. We like all types of cuisine and are prepared to splurge. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I don't have first hand knowledge of a waterside restaurant for a splurge. Hopefully others will chime in.

Solsiden is a highly rated seafood restaurant on the water with both a set and a la carte menu. We were unable to get reservations there.

In 2023 we had a lovely dinner outside at Fiskeriet Youngstorget, a very good seafood shop with a restaurant, but it's not on the water and would not be considered a splurge.

Can't specifically respond to waterfront seafood restaurant - BUT I enjoyed a wonderful lunch at The Grand Cafe with historic paintings!

OMG, thanks very much, marnamc2! I’d actually been wondering about the Grand Cafe. Well, I can always treat hubby to a birthday lunch at the Grand Cafe AND a birthday dinner at a waterfront seafood restaurant. 😊 Thanks again!

We are back from Oslo and our tour guide took us to Vinland, not a waterfront seafood restaurant, but the most fabulous meal with wine pairings. We had excellent halibut and several other fabulous dishes. I highly highly recommend it.

It's not on the water, but I had a superb dinner at hos Thea (https://www.hosthea.no/en/home). It's truly the kind of place that would be perfect for a wonderful birthday celebration, and it's not small plates.

Thank you, Luv2Travel! We’re in Oslo for a couple of weeks and love halibut 😊(among lots of other seafood), so we’ll certainly add Vinland to the list.

Thanks for the recommendation and the link, Lane. We’ll check this out, especially because of the restaurant’s non-small plates approach!
