I will be in Bergen for 3 nights and looking for recommendations on some good comfortable clean hotels, ideally in the city center.
Thanks in advance.
There are several forum threads on this topic in the past year. Just do a search for "Bergen hotel."
We had a very good experience at Hotel Orion.
I've stayed at both the Admiral and the Havnekontoret and would happily stay at either again.
Thanks Kim & Suki. I will check out your recommendations.
I've also stayed at the Clarion Admiral. Great location and if the weather is nice you can have breakfast on the balcony right on the water.
We enjoyed our stay at the Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz in May 2023. Great location, nice breakfast.
Last August (2024) we stayed at the Thon Bristol and it was fine. The hallways were painted some extremely bright colors, which looked odd to us, but the room was nice and they had a good breakfast. The location was ideal. Everything was clean and well kept.
Avoid Havenkontoret – They Refused to Honor the Booked Rate
We booked a room at Havenkontoret in early May and checked in this afternoon. Upon arrival, we were told they would not honor the rate we had reserved. Fortunately, we had printed our confirmation, but the staff claimed it must have been part of a promotional campaign and insisted they couldn’t do anything since the manager was off for the weekend. We’ve spent two weeks traveling through Scandinavia without any similar issues.
This left a very bad impression, especially given how many other hotel options are available nearby. I strongly recommend choosing a different hotel.
10 days ago we stayed at the Radisson Blu Royal in Bergen for two nights. The location is beyond ideal - it's literally right in the UNESCO World Heritage old center along the waterfront, just set back 50 meters and tucked in behind the historic row of colorful Bryggen buildings you see in every photo of the city. Can't beat the location, they have a great breakfast spread, service was attentive and helpful. We did have one issue: No air conditioning. Now, I had never dreamed that we would ever need or want aircon in Bergen, but when we were there, they were experiencing an unprecedented heat wave - with temps in the mid 80s. I had to laugh when our flight landed, we were going through passport control, the officer called us up to his window, we handed over our passports...before he had even looked at them he started complaining about the heat: "It's too hot, everyone is sweating and sunburned..." then he handed us back our passports, muttered "enjoy your stay" then went back to grousing about the heat. Ohkaaaay.
The hotel is in an older building, so no aircon, as the front desk explained "when the building was built, nobody could have imagined this." There was a fan left in our room, which was enough for us to get by in reasonable comfort. We did have to leave the windows open, and with no screens I expected mosquito bites but we saw/heard/experienced none. A lot of bird squawking noises though (we had just come from Shetland, so we were used to bird noise), lots of seagulls around.
I'd stay there again, I think the 80-degree temperatures are probably pretty rare (we paid with points, I have no idea how expensive the rooms were).
Given how pricey everything is in Norway, here's an option that will save you a lot of money compared with full service hotels:

Good location, very clean. Check-in and check-out are automated at a kiosk. There's no front desk, but there is a staff member available 24x7 in an office on the ground floor. I had a slow-draining bathroom sink, and he was up there and fixed it within 5 minutes.
Another vote for the Thon Rosenkrantz. Our room was quite large and the breakfast buffet was the grandest I’ve ever seen. They had choices for just about every cuisine you could want. And they had an early evening spread as well. Much smaller but great for a light dinner. All included in room cost.
More hot weather is projected for Scandinavia, so if thiuls trip is coming up soon, I'd book a hotel with a/c. It's not always easy to find that info on a hotel website. A quick look at booking.com usually makes it very simple. Then you can book on the hotel's website if you want to. That will often be cheaper, especially for chain hotels.
We also enjoyed the Radisson Blu Royal. We had no problem with room temp in July 2023.
My son-in-law was in Bergen last year and enjoyed his stay at the Thon Hotel Orion. The price was decent, too.
Lane, that is interesting about that hotel, though. I will keep that in mind for the future. Thanks!
I stayed 3 nights at the Best Western at Ole Bull.
excellent location. the rooms seemed like they were suited for extended stays, as they had a kitchenette in them. laundry room as well.
given that, we bought groceries and had prepared our own breakfasts, plus did our laundry at the midpoint of our travels.
