Hotel Continental Oslo

Superb. Pricey, but worth every penny. Great location, wonderful room, fantastic breakfast buffet, responsive staff, plus many other positives. The only downside (and it's a small one) - they made us fend for ourselves in obtaining taxi from OSL, and it appears we paid about $90 over the going rate for transfer from OSL to hotel. Otherwise, everything was perfect.

Assuming you mean the airport, your big mistake in my opinion was to take a taxi. The train stops just across the street from the hotel and would have saved you both time and money.

Thanks, Badger. We know about the train station across the street and how it is faster and cheaper. When we transition, we want minimal stress. We travel somewhat heavy and transitioning via the train has for us typically has presented some sort of problem (at least in Prague and Budapest last summer in 95 degree heat) - especially getting our luggage on board, finding a seat, etc. Also, we have multiple people which adds to the per capita cost. Maybe the train in Oslo is easier to negotiate.

The trains in and around Oslo are very easy to navigate in my opinion, there is nothing to worry about. I usually recommend the regional trains, but if you are worried about finding a seat, take the Flytoget airport trains.

Thanks again, Badger. If we travelled light or by backpack, getting on the train would not be much of a problem. We were traveling with heavy suitcases.

Sounds to me like your gripe is with the taxi driver; not with the hotel. I understand the math wrt multiple passengers and individual train tickets. I don’t know what you paid but it seems like the stress that you were trying to avoid came anyway in the cost of your transfer.

Safe travels.

Yes and No, dpoweron. Make no mistake, Hotel Continental is a fine hotel and we loved every minute of our stay. I asked by e-mail if they could set us up with a taxi and they said use the taxi information stand at the airport. They set us up with Oslo Taxi on the return trip to OSL. If I had know about Oslo Taxi before we selected one at the airport taxi information kiosk, I could have saved about 900 NOK. The Oslo Taxi vehicle which we used on the return trip was roomier than the more expensive one we took from the airport to the hotel. So, yes, my gripe is with the taxi driver in a sense, but the hotel could have advised me by e-mail of the arrangement they have with Oslo Taxi and I could have set it up myself.
