Train from Berlin to Moscow

I'm researching buying tickets for the Berlin to Moscow train on the Paris to Moscow express. But I'm fumbling over the ticketing and terms used for cabins. We want to buy a compartment for 4 people. Although there are only two adults and a child travelling, we want to buy the extra ticket so we have the entire compartment.

Also, any tips or suggestions about buying the Belarus VISA so we can travel through the country enroute to Russia are appreciated, too.

Have you thought about flying? I know S7 and Airberlin have nonstop flights for under $150 and only 2 1/2 hours. If you do take the train, you would need a transit visa to go through Belarus. We went to Belarus this spring. It was a great trip but the visa was very expensive and challenging.
