I’m signed up for the 8/26-9/3 Tallinn, Helsinki, St. Petersburg tour and I’m headed to Moscow on 9/3. I’d be happy to have any of my future traveling companions join me in Moscow to possibly share some tours or meet for a meal. I am a little bit apprehensive about traveling solo in Moscow. Or perhaps someone has used Marina Penkovskaya, the travel agent recommended by RS, to help plan our post tour time in Moscow. Thanks.
Be sure to look at CNNs article on many of the beautiful Moscow subway stations. We visited many of them on our visit several years ago and they are very memorable. It helps to have a good metro map and plan out your route ahead of time so you know how many stops you’ll be going, due to the Cyrillic.
Newer trains (available everywhere except the green line) have marquee announcements of stops and touchscreen maps in English; voice announcements on all trains are in Russian and English. As far as the metro map goes - the easiest and most convenient solution is to download Yandex Metro app.
The old Soviet stations are awesome, but the new lines (bottom of red line, new yellow (8a) and new north-western portion of the blue, to name just a few) are quite stunning, too - in a different kind of way.
