We are planning on visiting Kaliningrad this summer. Would appreciate any advise including --how many days, where to stay, etc.

Hard to give any advice without any background. Some find Kaliningrad quite interesting and travel here for weeks, while some just visit basic mainstream tourist spots in one or two days.
Let us try to start from your expectations: why you have chosen this destination, what you expect to find here? :-)
Are you are looking to explore some german heritage of the area?
Or interested in military history? Or russian culture?
Or just making a stop on a longer trip across Baltic states and Poland?
Or, maybe, you also going to visit Moscow, Saint Petersburg?
Etc.
