I am planning a solo trip to Moscow (then other cities) in September. The routing on my free ticket would have me arriving in Moscow at 4:30 am. Has anyone arrived at this hour and how horrible is it?
Are you flying in? If so, looks like the aeroexpress trains start running from DME airport at 6:00 am and from SVO airport at 5:3, am. By the time you get through customs you wouldn't have to wait too long. The airport has places to get coffee or food if you want. There are also several ATMs to get rubles. Do you know whereyou're staying in Moscow? The metro is great, very frequent and safe. But it's good to figure out the route first, since you may need to change metro lines. I'm sure your hotel can tell you the best route.
Becky's right - by the time you get through immigration (I don't remember customs, but I sure remember the one hour that passport control took), it won't be that early.
If you don't want to use the express trains and then the Metro upon arrival, ask your hotel about booking a car transfer. Particularly if you're not used to big city Metro systems and/or if you have more than one bag and/or if you'll be jetlagged (not sure how many time zones away you're coming from), the car will be worth every penny. Once you've dropped your bags, you can then get the hang of the Metro much more easily.
Thanks for the advice. I am now arriving late afternoon and will definitely have hotel arrange transport since I'll have more than one bag.
