Where to stay overnight between Porto and Lisbon?

Hello,

My 2 daughters (age 32, 27) and I are traveling to Portugal next summer, arriving in Porto on 7/31 AM and leaving from Lisbon on 8/9 late AM. Our original plan is to stay in Porto 4 nights, taking a train to Lisbon. then staying in Lisbon for the remainder of our trip and doing day tours from both of these cities.

Now I'm thinking that we might rent a car for 3 or 4 days, and drive from Porto to Lisbon, staying one night somewhere between these cities, and 1 or 2 nights in Cascais, or somewhere similar near Lisbon and chill on the beach before heading to Lisbon. We would drop off the rental car before checking in to our Lisbon hotel. Revised itinerary would look something like this: 3 nights in Porto, 1 night in ? (looking for suggestions), 1 or 2 nights in Cascais and 3 or 4 nights in Lisbon. I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

We enjoyed both Coimbra and Tomar. If you like beaches, then Nazaré might work. It is a typical beach town and will likely be very busy that time of year.

Coimbra would be my first choice, both for the city itself and for the ease of getting there. It would eliminate the need for a car.

You would, however, have to train to Lisbon then train back to Cascais, if you chose to stay here. Not a huge deal but just an fyi.

Hello,

In my opinion I would go to Tomar. I live and work in Tomar so I'm biased but there are lots of history here, Templars, convents, castles, beautiful river and great bars and restaurants. You're also close to many other locations like Golegã and the house of Carlos Relvas, Aquaduct de Pegoes, Batalha 40 minute drive. Óbidos great castle and medieval town 1hr drive. Coimbra 1hr drive. Fátima 35 mins Sanctuary of Fátima, a Catholic pilgrimage site.
Lisbon 1:30 hr drive.
