I have 22 days in Portugal in September and I have a tentative itinerary by using Rick Steves Two Week car (I am not driving) as a loose guide. My specific question at this time is where is the best place to stay in the south on the Algarve? I just investigated Salema accommodations and sparse options although I have sent out email enquiries. I would take the train from Lisbon and then use bus transit to get around the area to see sights - I will have 3 -4 days there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Salema has been ruined by over development and really needs a car to get around if you have little time there, as public transport is sparse. You would be better off staying in Lagos, which has better, although not brilliant public transport. Tavira would be my other choice on the Algarve.
You will probably find that much of the best accommodation for September has already been taken, as it’s a popular time to visit for those not tied to school holidays and many bookings will have been made last December/January.
I will second pretty much everything Jennifer has said. Lagos is first choice and Tavira second choice.
And, I would not try to do the Algarve without a car.
